The administration should follow the USC model, assign an interim head coach, announce a change in direction, and pull the trigger NOW on Diaz, for several reasons. First, it sends a strong message to the players, recruits, alumni and college football community that expectations of excellence at UM are much higher than what the program has achieved over the recent, sustained period of time. Second, an interim would provide a spark for the remainder of the season, possibly inspiring players and providing comfort to recruits. Larry Scott did a nice job after Golden got shot in the head. Third, it is HIGHLY likely that things come unglued over the next several games. Under Diaz, this team will be lucky to go 2-2 this month, and the losses could be debacles, adding to long list of national embarrassments Diaz has overseen. If that happens, the administration's hand will be forced, Manny will be let go in shame, but only after the damage is done--players lose hope, seek transfers, fans abandon the program, and recruit look elsewhere. All of those things make it harder, not easier, to attract a transformational coach.
Some argue waiting until season end avoids chaos and saves money (due to buyouts). But the program is in a state of chaos now, with everyone in and around it waiting for the final shoe to drop. Moreover, any few millions saved by waiting out a buyout provision is chump change compared to the cost of rebuilding the damage that is sure to come as this program sinks further into the abyss.
If anyone knows anyone tied to the decision process here, please urge them to move with alacrity.
