no way on GODS green Earth does this team beat last years…. You can site everything statistically you can point to, superior depth, video game offensive stats, etc etc

But they don’t win on that basis and they have failed the “eye test”

Bottom line- we hoped the drop off wouldn’t be prodigious— but our O line and D line can’t compare to last years units. Fact.

Delude yourself if you like- I’d wager you’re ****ing in the wind on this one hoss….

this next week needs to be one where you at least tinker a bit with what you're putting out there..
 
I also put a lot on Dawson. He seems to lose the plot at times, can't find something to adjust to what the other side is doing. Running gme seems awfully predictable .
 
with injuries mounting- depth withering away - key niche players gone- the Clemson game on the road - who has more “dudes” (from a recruiting/NFL projection) than Wake Forest- does not seem as certain as I imagined. Id like to see Belichek beat them today and demoralize them.

- Darian Mensah was surgical early and then struggled late. The Canes offense looked unstoppable early on and then quite frankly, played scared late in the game. But I do wonder if Malachi Toney and Mark Fletcher were a bit banged up as they were on the sideline for key drives on early downs. Regardless, that one drive where they basically threw three screens was infuriating.

- Defense, up and down, and then up again. Bad first drive, then a good stretch, then they cracked a bit at 31-7 giving up consecutive TD drives. But I give them credit, they bowed up late. If they just make routine tackles for sacks on a gutty Gio Lopez, the game would've been different.

- I still wonder if the Miami defense is better off playing more man coverage.

- The run game was there at times, but then it bogged down late. Mirabal is still probably looking for his best five.

- Damon Wilson, one really bad penalty on the roughing the passer, but he did make his presence felt in the second half consistently. He drew penalties and provided constant pressure.

- OK, a win is a win. But this is a win that shows that the Canes are still very much a work in progress on both sides of the ball.

How many snaps did Cantwell and Cogden get? I didn’t see much of them at all

The guy who has really disappointed me is Buchanan . I knew SJ wasn’t a guard long term but I thought Buchanan would at least step up and solidify one of the two guard spots.

Can SJ actually play center? I don’t think him and our current center are that good but I also thought Markel Bell sucked and they made him good so I’m hoping to be wrong again.

Based on what I saw yesterday, we have a bunch of options at the interior positions who all lack experience.

Since they all lack experience, I'd throw the highest pedigree puppies out there and let them learn how to swim. Here's the one obvious thing here....no matter what combination we put there, there are going to be struggles. I'd rather struggle with Cogden and Cantwell out there and know I have two kids with size and potential who could be battle ready by the end of the year.
 
There’s a lot of criticism of Dawson, some deserved.

I too did not like the reliance on the quick screens in the fourth quarter. Everyone in the stands, everyone on television and everyone on Wake Forest’s defense knew they were coming so there was no way they were going to work.

In his defense Fletcher and Brown were both out there’s no running back to Help pick up the blitz. Unless you want to trust a true freshman. Which I don’t think you want to do. The interior of the offensive line was getting killed in the past rush. Mesa did not have time to stand in the pocket and wait for an open receiver downfield, Even with our allegedly elite WR.

I’m just a fan so I don’t know the proper adjustments to what I described, so someone with actual knowledge can clue me in.

I’m guessing running Mallory inside is probably against the blitz is probably the answer, but I don’t think that would have resolved anything.
 
There is something to be said about winning a game like that. Bad quarters and halves are going to happen. That’s just how it goes. Despite a dismal 2nd half from the offensive, it’s a positive the defense bucked up. The offense will get right. Too much talent not to. I’d be far more worried if the defense got dragged up and down the field all game.

Also, did anyone really think we’d lose all that talent from last year and not see some effects early this season? Seriously.

Definitely worried about the injuries. We’ve been fortunate in that regard the last couple seasons, this year had been bad, and not sustainable.

They don’t have a dynamic QB like Gio last night. In fact, it looks like they don’t have a QB, period.
