The Athletic: Why is Miami mired in mediocrity?

Everyone should be as optimistic or more as they’ve always been right now, because we’re actually trying. Doesn’t guarantee massive success, but you have to understand, we literally weren’t even trying for the past 15 years. Yeah, we bought uniforms and inflated footballs, but the teams we were so called “competing” with may as well have been playing a different sport.

We’ve been trying to win with both hands tied behind our backs. At least now we’re throwing punches. We’ll see if any of them connect, but you’re never gonna win a fistfight in handcuffs.
Good post. Speaking of handcuffs, I'd argue the biggest change in the past few years was getting rid of Blake James as AD. That to me was the first big sign that things were actually changing for the better around here.

This is a great post, brother.

Should be stickied at the top of the doorway.

We have been a very unserious program for way too long. People clown about the culture...but this goes much deeper than just the culture. The entire football athletic program was just an unserious operation run by mostly buffoons outside of Mark Richt coming in for a last gasp of air in his coaching career and catching lightening in a bottle in a very lucky year.

It shouldn't be that hard to win here. It has been. Mostly because we had unqualified goofs littered throughout the Hecht and did everything on a poverty budget. Not even @SWFLHurricane is going to go into a North Korean Family's pantry and make a gourmet meal on ****roaches and rats.

We’ve taken steps to return to being a good team. Financial investment leading to better staffs(hasn’t happened yet) and facilities(happening already).

Just have to put the pieces together. But the pieces to the puzzle are being provided in a way that they have not been before

‘Maybe this is kind of who the Hurricanes are’

Click-baity and doomsday-ish headline aside (and I know some here dislike Manny Navarro), but I thought the article itself was fair and somewhat optimistic that Cristobal and UM leadership are determined and/or moving in the right direction to fix things.

What did y'all who read it think?
Manny Navarro. Another manny i wish we could get rid of.

Back in the glory days of 58 home win streak and our NC and all .
Every so often as this all started to faded away I thought sometime along the way going forward we’d have to pay the dues for our successful reign.

I don’t know it just would hit me every so often that if we didn’t nurture and respect all these glory years that once we let them go there GONE and the price to get it all back would be harder then we could ever imagine.

I don’t know if any of the ole folks here whom witness these days of glory ever thought the same thoughts?

GOCANES

We should be optimistic that our admin is finally spending big boy $. The question is how long will it last? If the admin has prioritized this as an always priority for the school then overall we should be positive because eventually we are bound to hire the right group of coaches, recruit the right group of players, and build competitive facilities.

If the admin invested in Mario as their last ditch effort to prioritize football then we should all be nervous. Mario may be able to eventually turn us around but he has made some clear mistakes in year 1 and the anxiety fans have about mario leading the program is warranted. Mario will have his chance to make changes but if he fails will the admin be willing to keep pumping resources for the next coaching staff? We'll see

We were not more handcuffed than duke, unc, pitt, vt, gt, bc, uva or any of the other mediocre teams we were tasked with beating…to say we were ad a disadvantage over most acc teams is laughable

$2M question.
Heard on some podcast, it's more than $2M. Think they said he has a 3 year contract.
If there is one thing this program is good at is flushing money down the toilet in buyouts.
I don't think Mario has any choice at this point, just from a recruiting standpoint, I don't see how he can keep him.

We're mired in mediocrity because the fans don't have enough faith in the coaches. There is too much criticism and negativity. We're losing recruits because of the bad attitude of the fanbase. It's not just the team cultcha that has to change, it's the fan cultcha too. It should have been obvious at the beginning of the season that we were a 2 win team. Rambo alone was worth 5 wins last year, so losing him was massive. If anything, the triumvirate of Cristobal/Gattis/Steele has EXCEEDED expectations by winning 4 games. Canes fans need to show some appreciation.

I really do think the Hurricanes, and possibly, the Hard Rock is cursed lol. **** just doesn’t make sense. Or maybe it’s like my homeboy, a UGA fan, said.

“The city of Miami is just too fun, exciting, thriving, and full of hoes for these kids to be focused on just football. You have to live in a butt-**** city like Tuscaloosa, Clemson, Athens, or any other country *** place to be that focused on playing football. I really think that’s the issue with the hurricanes.”
Plenty of "hoes" in Tuscaloosa, etc, but yeah, Miami is way better in so many ways, and it has been for decades.

Yeah, I would be satisfied with whatever our W-L record in '22 if it looked like two things were happening:

1. We played with consistently good effort

2. We showed signs of developing into a smart football team

1. Soft players from County Club Manny era where they could skip practice or miss curfew and start games—and they're now dealing with a hard-*** alpha who has a boot up their *** and they're not responding.

2. See the answer to the last question.

Gattis is a dud and he has to go, but fact remains Mario thought (or at least hoped) he had more under the hood than he did and fact remains he didn't. This program, has been a 7-5 **** for 16 seasons and this is indeed the bottom-out season from two decades of dumpster fire football.
