Yea, part of this program's luster is the education level we're at. Anything below top 40 is unacceptable.
 
Miami has invested far too heavily into the Medical arm of the university. UHealth, specifically the off-campus facilities, are a money and resource sink. We peaked when we were much more focused on the schools of business, law and some of the research sciences.

Another issue is the value (ROI) of a Miami degree has dropped off since the tuition has spiked to over $50K (!) in the past few years. That's up more than $18K from when I went there in 2003-2007.

No, it's a pro-UM thread

I can tell you that that the admissions side, in my experience, has gone downhill. They have lost key staff to other institutions in the past three years.

We can't keep getting candidates like Pentagon Cane's Son and others if it keeps dropping...Clemson is now in striking distance, let that sink in.

Bingo. We've been backfilling tenured professors with adjuncts to save money.

At one point in the mid 2000's, we were on the verge of being comparable to a Northwestern or Vanderbilt. Shalala actually started the whole UHealth thing so in reality, it's more her fault than Frenk. Just my 2 cents.

It is embarrassing that UF and UGA are ahead of us, but these rankings don't mean ****. I can tell with 100% certainty that UM degrees hold more weight then both of them as far as financial positions in NYC/SF. If you are in some BS major like teaching or something like that I'm sure the rankings hold weight, but not in the financial sector.

not sure why someone would downvote you for this, but it's 100% correct. uhealth and the fallout from the hospital purchase are bleeding the university dry. it's not some kind of secret.

on the other side, usnews rankings have some pretty bunk criteria in their formula. disappointing to see us out of the top 50 for optics, but it's not a really big deal since the football team just proved that a great program will bring you the biggest incoming class in the history of the school.

Wall Street Journal just released their rankings and UM came in #47 out of top 50. EXCELLENT. :)

Critics: Shalala leaves big medical school challenges for successor

Yes, one of Frenk's many challenges.

You can poo poo the rankings all you like, but trust me, they matter to prospective students and parents. Miami's admission selectivity is about right, but the test scores/gpa are not, they are going down as the number of candidates goes down. With UF pulling #35, the competion for top in state students is way lopsided into their favor...No more Bernie Big Mac Machen, Fuchs is serious.

The scholly $$$ has to improve and the admissions people need to up their game...It's like Golden works there now.

Thank you. So far he is loving his experience. He said he could be marching to breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Air Force Academy. BTW, he gets back from ROTC after doing physical training around 7 am and they've got a coffee bar in the lobby of Hecht. It was sushi night a couple of days prior. His only ***** was the student buses yesterday. Too many drunks getting on the buses going to Hard Rock.

He did say something, I don't know if this is true, that tuition only covers about 18% of the operating budgets. They are exploring how to make tuition not the reason to go elsewhere.
 
If you look at the UM fact book you will notice that standardized test scores and high school GPA among the incoming freshman class each year have dropped. I don’t know what’s causing this but something has to be done.
 
Eh, unless you are Top 25, the rest is just a crap shoot. Will make huge jumps or drops year to year. For example, US News put a huge emphasis on reputation. Let's say a school gets in the news for the wrong reasons like the football program hiding sexual assaults. When they poll college Presidents for rep, of course it will be in the back of their mind even though it has little to do with academics, so a school will take a hit there. Also the rankings weigh things Miami probably scores poorly in like social mobility (looking at students whose parents make less than 50k). If my experience at UM law was any indicator, most students I saw didn't come from households making less than 50k.

That is true. I forgot all about my senior year. I was all about the US News, WSJ, and Bloomberg rankings. I was mainly concerned with the business school rankings, but you are absolutely correct. However, that was mainly because no one in my family had any idea what a good school was besides the Ivys. Guys I work with lead their kids to go to the schools that we recruit the hardest which does not necessarily correlate to this list.

You are 100% correct about that. My roomate freshman year actually got into Cornell(I know, one of the weaker Ivys, but still). However he was going to work for his fathers company so he said he would rather be able to ball out in SOBE every weekend and get a UM degree then hanging out in Ithaca and get a Cornell degree. We have a VERY wealthy student body.

There is not a single employer I've ever heard of that would choose an employee from the #35 rank school over the #47. It is irrelevant. Grad schools don't care either, unless the undergrad has a good rep in a certain area (like Cal Poly for science). Same goes for law schools. If you get into a T14, you should absolutely go there. There are lots of law firms that will absolutely not consider anyone outside of the T14, even if you graduate summa *** laude. For everyone else, I recommend going to a state school and paying in state tuition so you aren't saddled with 100k of debt (unless you get into Miami, in which case you should go there because it's great to be a Miami Hurricane)
