Tennessee athletic director John Currie said; “Some may criticize our decision to offer our head coaching job to Don Shula, but we think that’s a knee jerk reaction. It is not very often when you can convince a Super Bowl winning coach boasting 343 wins to take the reins of a college football program. We believe that parents and recruits will be shocked when Coach Shula is wheeled into their living rooms.
The 87 year old Shula indicated that he is considering the offer and hopes to have an answer in the coming days. Several times during the press conference Coach Shula referred to the Volunteers as the Titans, which led some to wonder if Shula thought the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League had made the offer.
Adding to the embarrassment of the Volunteers administrations ham-handed handling of the coaching search is the Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant episode. Apparently, Tennessee did a recent confidential, internal deep dive evaluation of Coach Bryant. A special meeting was called to introduce their findings to Tennessee’s Board of Directors who were stunned to be put in a position to tell the athletic department that Bryant has been dead for 34 years. In response to that news John Currie exclaimed; “That has to be the reason that Bryant hasn’t been returning our calls.”
