Temple getting on campus stadium

USC and UCLA among others

Can't count USC...the coliseum is literally within walking distance from their campus and it's about to be renovated. UCLA on the other is in a very similar situation like us, where their stadium is pretty far from campus (traffic wise). The only difference is that Rose Bowl is dang near in a residential area so most fans are only 5-10 minutes away walking.

I, personally, don't think an on campus stadium is necessary as oppose to a closer, smaller venue (45-50k). Having an IDP is important to the arms race, but having a closer college sized stadium would be perfect. Not sure if we'll ever see it in our lifetime...but it would be great for revenue purposes.

Many here act as if they live on campus. There are so few students that actually go to games, that the importance of an on campus would have zero impact, other than the traffic around Coral Gables. Actually a stadium that far south. would probably hurt attendance from anywhere north od Dade and Broward.

Absolutely agree here...the student body of Miami is not your target audience...not for this school.

That's retarded. This is how you build a fan base, by getting the student body involved. Otherwise we rely on the fans of Miami who never fill Marlins Park, who never filled Sun Life when they were in the World Series (!), who never filled American Airlines during the regular season with Bosh, Wade, and James. The student body more than any other group should be the main goal.

I think you have been watching too much ESPN the Heat sold out every game when Lebron was here and they still have a consecutive sellout as of today. The Marlins sold out every game in both World Series they played again don't know where you getting your facts. The biggest problem we have is that our student population is mainly kids from the northeast or international studies; we need to get more local kids to go to UM

Lol. Yeah maybe they "sold out" their games like we sold 60k tickets to the wake forest game. I remember my buddy walked up to the box office before a world series game and bought a ticket. Point being this is a very, very passive and bandwagon city. Notre Dame, Stanford, Ga Tech all have very similar student bodies. I was from the northeast and went to most of the games. That's not what the problem is.

I'm glad we don't have an on campus stadium. If we did we may not be able to serve alcohol. And I don't think a lot of U fans would show up if you couldn't drink.

Donna Shalala did more for temple football with one hire than she ever did for Miami foothall in a decade plus

Youd think after all these years and 5 titles you'd get something from the student body, right? Dont you think it's been tried? When you play in a pro stadium in a major metro area with significant pro competition in every season, your key to success is getting the general public. The student body is only about 10K anyway isnt it? Do a little research before you try being a wiseass, and check yourself before you toss around the word "retarded" so easily.

Old news. This was posted on here months ago.

MODS: PLEASE create a new board for stadium postings! Very tired of the same redundant postings every other week, mostly from people who rarely go to games.

There's roughly 11,000 undergrads at UM. Roughly half of them attend football games. So you want to build a 50,000 seat stadium, in Coral Gables, so 5,000 kids won't have to drive to a football game that they attend for free? This is not a public university with a huge enrollment and giant alumni base. 95% of the people in Sunlife aren't students or alums. Yes, the south Florida fanbase is fickle and often jumps on and off bandwagons but if you win, people will show up. Not only will they show up, they'll spend boatloads of money. Every single person who lives in south Florida should have learned their lesson from the Marlins. Building a new stadium doesn't mean jack **** if the team doesn't win. I don't want to hear about how the stadium is too far or the seats suck or whatever. They could put the stadium in Boca and it would be full if the team was competing for titles.

Only canes fans **** on a stadium good enough for the actual championship game and superbowls. The key to winning is not getting easier for the 15000 students and harder for the rest of the millions of fans.

Uh no, I don't think an on campus stadium has been tried. That's the point. They've always targeted the city of Miami, and don't YOU think that after 5 national titles they'd get something from the city? Notre Dame has a smaller student body. Let that sink in.

I know a campus stadium hasnt bern tried. I meant that theyve tried engaging and activating the student body and the results are what they are.
Id love an on campus or more local stadium. My point is to not build or plan with the idea of the student body being your prime target for filling the stadium.
And ND is a totally different animal...

we have only 6k on average that show up to games. its not ur target audience for games.

18k students but only about 6k attend games. there is too much to do on a saturday and a noon game on saturday will never fill up considering most people r still sleeping from the night before

And throw coral gables out as there is no way the infrastructure can handle the game day traffic. they had bumper to bumper traffic on us 1 southbound a few saturdays ago for the wake forest hoops game which was probably two thirds full at the most.

Exactly. If you were concentrating on the student body as your target market you could make a small 15K person indoor arena. The Orange Bowl wasn't an on campus stadium and we rocked that place. We didn't sell out all the games, but the design made 50K sound and feel like 80K.
An on campus stadium is not going to happen without public money or a tripling of the student body. Neither of which will happen.
We just have to find a way to draw more fans to the county line. Maybe reduce ticket prices or offer $5.00 stadium parking It's better to be full at a discount than half empty at full price.

Per usual, we are fixated on the exceptions as opposed to the rule.

We're not the only one. Well isn't that wonderful? A handful of other schools are nearly as dense and disadvantaged as we are.

Meanwhile, one powerhouse program after another can trot those recruits onto campus in the final weeks and days approaching national signing day, and show them the proximity of the stadium to the athletic offices and to where they will live, and everything else. Then we wonder why we lose guys down the stretch every year while other programs swipe. Yeah, so baffling.

Everything flows from campus. I'm glad I've had Canes basketball season tickets the past two seasons. Gad, an actual college atmosphere with young and old approaching the venue from all directions, with players from other Canes athletic programs filing into the building after their own practices or classes, even if arriving well late and then not staying until the finish. What a concept, a campus building as the centerpiece of an athletic program. I thought the idea was to look at alumni distribution maps, and rationalize the adjacent counties as ideal sites.

At least Howard had the proper foresight, and legitimately tried.

So are we now officially the only team in D1 football who doesn't have one?

we're not even the only team in our own conference without an on campus stadium.

nc state, pitt, usf, ucla, umass, hawaii, and unlv off the top of my head. there's more than that too.

NC state is considered to be on campus.

for all intents and purposes, it isn't though. carter-finley is 3 miles from campus and the plot it sits on is owned by the university. that's the only reason it's considered on campus. that would be like saying tropical park is on campus at um if we had a stadium there.

Their university is very big and covers a lot of land... The school of veteninary medicine is next door to the stadium. But you're right, the admissions building and all that other stuff if about 2 linear miles away.

I lived next to the stadium, I would never consider NC State's stadium to be on campus. It shares its parking lot with PNC arena. It's not within walking distance of students (unless you up for an hour+ walk both ways).

How close is Tropical Park?
