Targeting

Intent of the rule is admirable. No one wants players harmed or dealing with CTE down the road. Problem is it’s so arbitrary & hard to define. Ex-official in the booth last night initially said shot on Toney was targeting (defender led with helmet), only to back off when replay booth overturned the call. We get into debate of what”s a launch or leading with crown of helmet. What if offensive player lowers himself just before collision? Or can an offensive player be called for targeting? If not called, why not? Again, intent of rule is great, but interpretation is a crap shoot.

Watching the moment before the impact in super slo-mo tells you absolutely nothing. It's asinine.

Stop with the automatic suspensions. If there no intent or malice, then let them play next game. It’s football not chess.
Agree, but I think in the playoffs because each game stands alone in essence as like the first game of the season so to speak. I don’t think penalties or suspension carryover from game to game. Correct me if I’m wrong on that but I don’t think that Lucas has to sit out the first half of the next game am I right?

I haven’t read that anywhere. It seems it does carryover in playoffs.

Just make Targeting like unsportsmanlike penalties where you need to get two to be ejected.

That seems like such an obvious solution.

Pretty sure it carries over in the playoffs and believe it was stated last night.

Yeah, it even carries over into the next season. Wasn’t there a player that had to sit the first half of game 1 this year (forget what team)because he got thrown out for targeting the year prior either in a bowl or playoffs. And to make it even crazier he had transferred prior to the season.

I read online that the conference can appeal the suspension for the first half of the next game. Hopefully the ACC does that. Of course I’m not holding my breath when it comes to the ACC for anything though.

Instead, ACC will advocate for sitting out the entire championship game.
