TAMU Game Week Discussion Thread 2.0

We will have opportunities to create turnovers. Connor Weigman has accuracy issues and will throw off his back foot when pressured. Miami's DB's need to turn underthrown passes into interceptions. I'm not concerned about their running game but we have to pressure the quarterback.
Interesting. That's exactly what SteveO said about Weigman after watching their game against New Mexico. NM had 15 QB pressures. some of which were on the TAMU TD highlights. I expect our front 4 to get pressure all Weigman all day.

No, based on the fact we have 10 returning starters on offense, a very good QB who was a true fresh last year and didnt start til our 10th game of season, we started an all-freshman O line at end of the year, and we hired Bobby Petrino to totally revamp the O. What you saw against NM is not going to be the O you see Saturday.

Will we score a lot? I have no idea. But like I said, if we DO get going, I think we CAN score a bunch. We'll see.
New Mexico had 15 QB pressures. Some of which are on your TD highlights where your OL are getting beat badly. UM was one of the top teams in QB pressures last year. I think your OL is going to have a ruff day and Weigman is going to feel the pressure. I don't think he'll be able to throw deep. There just won't be enough time to get off his pass.

I also don't think you can run the ball on our defense.

I think we play a lot of 2 high. Back up off of their WRs, disguise coverages, and try to bait him into an interception or 2 by showing blitzers and dropping them into his passing lanes or him trying to throw it down field into 2 high. Probably won't end up with many sacks unless he's confused post snap and holds the ball because someone is in his passing lane he thought he had or because we disguised our coverage really well.

Other than that, he'll be getting the ball out quick taking what we give him. No since in blitzing too crazy because we won't be getting home and he has good legs.

Their interior OL is rock solid if Bryce Foster is fully healed from his season ending injury last year. Our best bet to get consistent pressure is probably Mesidor lined up on their true freshman RT. Force them to run middle or left.

Then again, in previous stops, Guidry has been more "stop the pass and force teams to run" versus the opposite that most DCs are doing. Durkin is very similar but has had lots of trouble stopping the run his last several years as DC and HC at multiple programs. I'm not the least bit afraid of their running game unless it's Reuben Owens and he's a liability in pass pro right now so we could take advantage there if they want to feature him.
Rock solid? That's not what the film says. They got beat badly several times by the New Mexico DL. You can see on some of Weigman's TD highlights where the interior OL is getting beat and the NM defender nearly gets to Weigman.

They have a freshman RT who gave up 5 pressures and a sack against New Mexico. That guy is going to have to block Mesidor and Bain today.

The RT coupled with they barely used their TEs means they are going to need their RBs in pass blocking. Feel like Guidry is going to overload that side and use JWill as the LB

I want to see Miami with 200lbs rds rushing. I know everyone wants to see us sling it around but run it and make them quit come the 4th quarter.
I think 150 wins it this year , that’s the magic number. The Ol is upgraded so I think we’ll have better chances of big plays in the pass game this go round. Play actions. This would be a great game for Harrell to make his presence felt. Stay ahead of the chains and have positive plays on first downs. That’s opens everything up and gets them off balanced.

Excited to see how this game turns out.

OL vs their DL.
Their WR vs our DB
Special Teams
Turnovers
Do we use our RB & TE in the passing game
Crowd noise impact them
Adjustments by our new coordinators at halftime

I’m as intrigued about this game as any in recent memory. I’m also clueless on how to feel lol. I will say things just feel different for the first time in awhile. From leadership on down. I guess we’ll see if my heart gets broken again or it’s really a new day.

my keys:
1) can the OL hold up vs a very talented on paper DL. Rivers better improve pass sets
2) can we pressure rushing 4
3) can we hold up on the edge vs quick hitters, slants, etc and tackle consistently
4) discipline
5) driving throws from TVD

Either way very interesting game. I think Guidry makes this team a contender vs most teams

Their Center is very legit. Freshman all American 2 years ago. Their LG is too and freshman all American last year. RG is good and has played a ton of ball.. started 20+ games and played in 30+.

I question their RT who is a true freshman. LT is probably the 2nd weakest link.
