Systemic Problem That No One is Talking About

Let's get off the bashing of coordinators/Golden for a moment and look at a systemic issue that started with Coker and permeated into Shannon's tenure. College Football today is much more complex than it was 20 or even 10 years ago and it takes the right combination of talent and football IQ to be successful. Nevermind the Alabama's of the world (you have to be a rare breed to play for Saban), but I look at a program like Stanford and see that as a program I'd like to emulate. Smaller, private, education-centered, that recruit players who "get" it. They don't bring in nearly the level of talent that we do either.

A weekly press conference hasn't gone by for eight years without a coach or player citing "mental breakdowns/errors" as a major reason why x or y unit wasn't successful. Kyle Wright, Jacory Harris or Steven Morris couldn't/can't read defenses. Romeo Davis, Colin McCarthy and Denzel Perryman are in the wrong spots on the field. Offensive lineman false start on critical drives. When was the last time we've had a "smart" football team? The think is, we have/have had smart football players. Glenn Cook, Jimmy Gaines and AJ Highsmith come to mind. The problem is, they aren't good football players.

The point I am trying to make is, talent is important, but the right mix of uber-talented players mixed with smart but football functional guys is really all you need. Do we need to change what we do philosophically, absolutely, but players make coordinators look really good or conversely, really awful. I trust that Golden, given his psych background, knows what that player looks like, because the program we've watched for the past decade is one that can't get up for big games and has shown a propensity for having guys who just don't have it between the eyes.

Donna Shalala entered in 2001 and it's been a steady decline since. It starts at the top.
She has way too much involvement & her hiring of Randy Shannon set us back 5-10 years.

$$$ also holds us back from hiring top notch coaches and S&C coaches. People can act like this isn't a big deal... but their fooling themselves.

So Fla talent shines all around the country. It's about simplifying things and letting the talent loose (for better or for worse).
Instead this staff runs a complex "multiple" system that sucks the football instincts out of kids who know only that - how to play fast.

When people say we look slow... it's generally because our scheme causes it & Swasey is vastly overrated.

Please stop. I'm sick of people using "dumb team" as a scapegoat.

We have 4 penalties for 15 yards in our last 2 games. We are not a "dumb" team. We just flat out suck. I'm sick of people using mental errors and breakdowns as an excuse.

If it happens over and over, week after week...it's not a "breakdown". It's who you are.

It's the coaches who are letting these players down, not the other way around.

Someone said it on one of these boards earlier. "If the whole class is failing, it's probably on the teacher."

There are plenty of teams with a lot dumber players than ours that can figure out how to play respectable defense. You can't make plays when the scheme doesn't put you in the position to.

LSU comes to mind. They would blow us out of the water and this is one of their weaker teams in the last 10 years.

Money and raised academic requirements = Shalala's role in this debacle.

$$$$ = It doesn't just hurt S & C but it hurts in that we have to work with inferior position coaches as well.

Academic Requirements = We can't recruit or get certain kids qualified that used to be the bedrock of the program.

How many of the studs on the 2001 team would have not been accepted under our current standards.

Think about it.
