Syracuse (1-1) at Pitt (2-0)

For the older folks, I was thinking to myself how long will that ten win season buy Fran Brown.

But going through Syracuse’s history; I was stunned at how much winning they did in the late 80s and 90s. WTF happened? Did they use to be a tuff out for Miami?

Looking into it, they actually have a much more impressive legacy than I’d knew about. Some of that is way more retro tho. The late 80s to 2001 (their last ten win season before Babers in 2018), run was pretty cool. I thought they always sucked tbh.

Dino Babers went 4-8 twice, then went 10-3 in year 3. It bought him 5 more years (5-7, 1-10, 5-7, 7-6, 5-6 —fired after the eleventh game).

Not easy to win ten games at Syracuse. But that Syracuse team was so undisciplined, they lead the nation in penalties, and to make matters worse he was playing the wrong quarterback for three games outta nostalgia.

Wouldn’t even feel Syracuse did him wrong if they pull the plug early despite that strong year 1, however, I know Syracuse is a bit different. That 10 win year season may buy him a fourth year.

We were having the same thought, simultaneously lol. good ****. You backed it up with some good detail. They used to be pretty good in the Big East I recall, for a while.

Syracuse was a much more serious football program back in those days. They produced several nfl greats. Playing in the dome was always challenging. It’s kind of a shame what they’ve become.

fascinating from their perspective. I think he is already on the hot seat after this game. At the same time, going 5-7 is still a two win improvement from last year. He’s currently 14-14 (6-12).

The bigger question is whether Syracuse has the stomach to sit on the inevitable for another season because they’re kinda broke and giving your HC two years or less after winning ten games for the third time in the 21st century, in year 1, with no larger commitment to NIL resources for the next guy, is an easy way to depress your potential carousel options.

Before my time, but they had some very good teams in the 1950s-1960s with a bunch of stellar players like John Mackey and a bunch of good RBs in Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Larry Csonka, Floyd Little and so on.
**** Macpherson was a very good coach for them during the 1980s. He had them winning again. When they're good, it usually means they are recruiting well in NY/NJ, CT, eastern PA, New England and poaching some in the midwest too. During the 1990s they also dipped into Florida, especially Tampa.
Several things happened to the program after early 2000s...First, Rutgers started beating them for players in NY/NJ and then the other Big10 schools really started beating them for many northeastern players. I would also add the loss of quality assistants under Pasqualoni like Ed Orgeron, Steve Addazzio, Kevin Rogers and others whose names escape me.

I gotta watch some of those retro games. Pretty wild to me that Syracuse was one of our toughest opponent certain years.

**** shame indeed! Pitt is respectable, but goddam with the legacies those two schools had, they really failed at marketing & sustaining themselves.

My lord they really fumbled it. They are going back to Florida again so that’s encouraging but the problems run deeper than that.

They’re going to be going back to the carousel soon so interested to see what candidates they attract. They have a new AD, and he wasn’t afraid to move on to land their new HC, prodigal basketball son in Jerry McNamara.

He used to be the AD at Toledo so maybe Jason Candle will end up there next. Oddly enough, UConn plays Syracuse pretty soon.

Syracuse's new DC is Vince Kehres, long-time DC for Candle at Toledo. Kehres and his Dad won alot of games at Mount Union, which is a tiny Div3 school but is one of the cradles for college and NFL coaches. Under **** McPherson they recruited hard everywhere within 5 hours of Syracuse. They initially ran vanilla offenses under McPherson but George DeLeone started changing offense to "Freeze Option". Steve Addazio, grad asst Dan Mullen, Kevin Rogers, etc started evolving offense to what Urban Meyer later implemented at uf and Ohio State. On the other side of the ball, Ed Orgeron brought the 4-3 defense as they had been running 3-4 stuff.
The middle to late 1990s had some pretty good players in McNabb, Marvin Harrison, Rob Konrad, etc.

cuse had some dudes in the 90s/early 2000s- a lot of the stars i ended up watching in the league as a kid. donovan mcnabb, marvin harrison, dwight freeney, keith bulluck

For years Syracuse had a great history and tradition at running back. Turning out great backs and equally great Pros. The greatest might be Jim Brown. Letters in 4sports, AA in FB/Lacross, HOF in Lacrosse and of course in CFB/Pro.

Perfect example .. 2 games at the same time. 1 is evenly matched between two ranked ACC teams. Should be a really good game. ESPN2

1 is supposed to be a blowout between a ranked and unranked team but has Alabama playing. ABC

At this point the chips are just stacked too much against the ACC to ever make up ground. Especially when your income is dependent on viewership.

That’s two athletic directors ago already. The school actually has bigger problems than sports. They are losing money due to the huge decrease in international enrollment combined with many north eastern kids going to big schools in the sun belt. Tuition is a fortune there. Kids are opting for much cheaper and more fun at Alabama and others than freezing in depressing central New York.

As you could see from the New York Times article their nil is like half of ours. Very hard to complete consistently at 20 million these days.
