My son trained under Swasey. He he thought he was a great mentor and very good college coach. I always had arguments with him about our players not as strong compared to SEC players. He always defended him while I always wanted him to be replace. His argument was always about how good Swasey was to young players with little or no parenteral guidance at home. He said Swasey was a father figure to many football players and had positive influence on their lives, etc.....
My son views explain, at least partially, Swasey's popularity among players and ex-canes. It doesn't justify his retention as head of S&C program which is in dire need of massive upgrade in the strength department. Richt has to look at it from on-field result prospective. Someone else on the staff can serve that father figure role.

This right here is why i think he was so well liked and thought of around Miami.....more for his mentoring/personal relationships than his S&C skill. The S&C coach is the ONLY coach who is with these guys year round, especially during the summer. If he's a good dude, and all accounts are that he was, he is probably looked upon as a father figure to many kids (or at least a close uncle/friend) and that is why it's tough for many to see him go. He seemed like he was a much better speed/agility guy than he was a strength/conditioning coach. People can blame Golden all they want and rightfully so, the things this staff did to Perryman, Duke, Yearby and others took away from their skills in my books. But the S&C coach has the final say on the exercises and workout programs, and these kids were either too weak/soft during the Shannon era, or too big, stiff and slow during the Golden era. At some point, the S&C program will be looked at and changed.

I'm not sure what Swasey is paid, but it would have been ok with me to keep him on staff in some capacity but UNDER the supervision of a top notch S&C guy.

apparently this is Richt's U Tough

If we look at the position, strength AND conditioning....I believe Swazz failed in the latter category. Those boys were constantly gassed and many looked tremendously out of shape. When I visited another thread that included Najeh's documentary...you can see night and day the difference between the S & C program under Moffit vs. it's current regime. U can see the body difference between the former Canes vs these current Canes. We now have guys that look like big kids vs grown men, and at times, it played out that way on the field.

Guys, stop being naive, the only way you can get an edge in strengthen and conditioning is not by hiring another coach. This is not rocket science. You need start a perfornance enhancing drug program just like Lance Armstrong had with the U.S. Postal team. Look what Alabama did to Michigan state last night. There wasn't any trick plays or better strategy. Below is what I posted in other thread but I think is better suited for this one.

Alabama dominates in the trenches to a degree that suggests they cheat. Maybe its great recruiting and player development or just maybe they are juicing. The relative lack of dominance int the NFL of Alabama players suggests that with aggressive PED testing they just dont seem that good. There is always that question

This. Both teams were even in the first and second quarters. Then fatigue starts kicking in. Are these big time programs being tested for EPO, growth hormones, insulin, testosterone, DHEA, IGF-1, cortisone and blood doping? Remember Lance Armstrong? Well, I have been following cycling for a long time, back in the mid 90s, Armstrong use to lose anywhere from 20 to 30 min on the last climb of the day. Then all of the sudden, he started winning the Tour de France. I always told my friends that Armstrong was the biggest lie in sports and 10 years later it was proven that he was. Some of the people in this forum started taking about Tommy Moffitt, strengthen and conditioning coach at LSU. Makes me a little uncomfortable, that he follows, Michael Rassmussen, a disgrace Dutch cyclist, who was kicked out of the tour the France in 2007 and consequently suspended two years for using the drugs I mentioned. He was never heard from again. It is no secret in cycling, that the biggest drug dealers are the cyclist themselves, they know how and where to get these drugs. Maybe it is just a coincidence, but in today's world of sports, where millions of dollars are on stake, I guess you need to get an edge.

Put it this way ......when HGH first made its way into college football. Miami was the "Alabama" back then. There was a "program"' in place .
It's sad to say but this is why I want moffitt back. As a former D2 player myself I know first hand
PED's are ALL OVER the sport. Just like giving recruits money is.

It is the sad reality and it sucks that good people need to get fired. But if we want to compete for titles again.... Whatever it takes. Im getting tired of getting beat by FSU every year and Clemson putting 59 on us.

not completely true. Golden was a control freak. he wanted guys bulked up. look at when they were lifting, it was always about the heavy weights.

Awesome, Richt fired Swasey, but what's Richt, gonna do about Richt? He overhauled His S&Cing staff at UGA a few years ago and still got fired. He didn't get fired for His Xs & Os...He didn't get fired for having bad ACs, ****, most of His ACs got just as good, or better jobs...He got fired because He didn't have the same thing Miles didn't have with Moffitt as His S&Cing coach...

From the sounds of it, it sounds like Moffitt is a high possibility . With that being said I am going to throw a name out there. Bo Sandoval, Head Strength Coach at Michigan if Olympic Sports. Has been at UM for several years . Don't know if he would leave his comfort level of UM. Hasn't directly trained any FB players, but all other Olympic Sports. Read his Bio. Dude has the resume. Studied at Southern Miss, GAed at USM, back when they were those hard nosed, tough teams in the late 90s-early 2000s. Went to a small NAIA school , gave them their first winning season and a division title. Left that for the Director of Strength and Conditioning at the US Olympic Training Center, then got the job head job at UM. Guy is super intense , and knows his stuff. He doesn't care who is who, and will get the work out of his players. Just throwing a name out there

These pro players all have better S&C coaches on their NFL teams with personalized regimes to do in the offseason. They don't need Swasey for anything other than a good comfort level guy to shoot the **** with and to spot them on heavy lifts. That's about it. They like him personally, which is why they wanted him back, not because he was a STUD S&C coach.

No, not true at all. They did Swasey's program and it wasn't just former Miami players there either. Some pretty prominent NFL players trained with him as well. They like Swasey because he trains them like their still in college. Most NFL programs emphasize injury prevention and injury prevention alone.

Yeah....it's a nice workout change from the norm they are used to, I can see that. Injury prevention in the NFL is huge and much needed. Guys get older and lose flexibility....they have already reached their muscle maturity and strength peaks. But it's not like the guys is better than Cochran at Bama. Why aren't these pros going there in the offseason. It's because he's in Bama.....not South Beach.

Everyone knew that was a bad hire from the start.

BUT.....he got fired bc Chubb blew his knee out. If he doesn't get hurt, i bet Richt is still there b/c Georgia is in the SEC Championship game against Bama.

How many times were we outscored and just plain destroyed in the 2nd half of games the last 10 years. The Swasey era has been the total antithesis of the "4th quarter belongs to us" mantra during the dynasty years.

I don't disagree with that at all. I'm sure Golden's direction was size. But the conditioning was terrible.....guys gassed quicker on this team than other lesser up-tempo programs. And i'm sure Swasey had full autonomy when Shannon was here and the guys on the team were weak. So again, why were the teams either one way or the other but never a combination of both?

It seems like Swasey was a lot better with the skill guys than he was the linemen.

AD basically forced that hire. Schottenheimer is a horrible coach. w/o that last name, he couldn't be the HC of a high school

i think our kids being weak and undersized under shannon was more a reflection of Swasey because RS didnt micro-manage everything like golden.

I worked on the construction of their weight room/indoor practice facility.

Always hated their weight room. No mirrors and pretty plain.
