Cornerback Traivon Leonard flips commitment from UNC to Auburn
Auburn has added another piece to the 2017 recruiting class.
Thee-star cornerback Traivon Leonard of West Palm Beach (Fla.) Oxbridge Academy has de-committed from North Carolina and committed to the Tigers.
“I just really like everything about Auburn,” Leonard told told AuburnUndercover. “I feel like it’s the best place for me.”
The move did not come as a huge surprise. On Sunday, AuburnUndercover reported it was “very likely” to happen.
For Auburn, Leonard is the second cornerback committed in the 2017 class, joining Malcolm Askew, an early enrollee.
Leonard has an 84 grade from 247Sports, making him a mid-3 star. Auburn, though, has had him extremely high on the board for some time and that has been reflected in its aggressive pursuit dating back several months.
Auburn secondary coach Wesley McGriff began to lock in on Leonard last summer, when Leonard made a multi-day trip to the school. The 6-feet-1, 194-pound Leonard returned for a game this fall.
Auburn has visited Leonard each of the past two weeks. Additionally, they watched him play in October.
According to Leonard, he grew close with McGriff during his recruitment.
“He’s really one of the biggest reasons I’m going to Auburn,” Leonard said. “I want to play for him. He’s not a guy I want to let down out there.”
Leonard is not an early enrollee. He will officially visit Auburn in January, he told us last week.
Auburn now has 18 commitments and moved up one spot to No. 8 in the recruiting team rankings.
