You talk about abandoning rote mantras as if it's a week to week gameplan, but what you're asking him to do is to move away from things he holds to be 100% true and authentic to him and his beliefs. Going against everything you know to be true simply doesn't happen for a proud, stubborn, 55+ year old who happens to be 8 games into the season.

I agree wholeheartedly, but a) in my opinion, it's not the best that these things are so central to his identity, at least not for the success of our football team, b) that's what the millions of dollars are for, to do hard things. Everyone in the real world has to adapt. If your boss comes in and says you need to work harder, you either work harder or start looking for new jobs. Mario's making too much money to die on the hill of his stubbornness. That's selfish. Like Jeff Van Gundy has always said, "Do you want to win or do you want to win YOUR way?" Agree completely but do not really trust Mario to evolve as a coach/person. I really think the only hope for him is some serious psychological work. He just doesn't have it and is at a loss for answers.

A fitting analogy: he is great at building and restoring classic cars, but he always crashes them and refuses to get lessons (stubborn to a fault--and no one keeps him accountable to himself).
