I’m very, very interested to see how Denbrock calls their offense.

He was the OC for Cincinnati from 2018 to 2021. Who was the QB there? Desmond Ridder….very capable runner. Had over 2000 yards in his career rushing.

Goes to LSU for 2022 and 2023. Who does he have? Jayden Daniels. Say no more.

Goes to ND for 2024. They get Riley Leonard.

By all accounts, CJ Carr is nowhere near the runner of Ridder, obviously nowhere close to Daniels, or the battering ram that Leonard was.

I wonder how much of this QB battle was trying to tailor the offense to Carr’s style and maybe almost hoping Minchey would win it, who seems to be more of a Denbrock QB. In his last 3 years as an OC, his quarterback led his team in rushing attempts. That is NOT going to happen this year.

ND has yet to name a starter in the a battle for the starting RG, with most of their “insiders” giving the edge to a true freshman. Blay, Moten, or Scott should have their way with whomever wins that spot.

This ND line is a lot weaker than last years line even with the players returning from injury.

ND Offensive Lineman who are no longer on the team or injured.
  1. Ty Chan transferred to UConn
  2. Pat Coogan, started in the playoffs, transferred to Indiana
  3. Rocco Spindler, started in the playoffs, transferred to Nebraska
  4. Sam Pendleton, started in the playoffs, transferred to Tennessee
  5. Charles Jagusah, projected 2025 starter, out for Miami game with a broken arm

That’s a lot of depth and staring snaps to replace.

ND insiders, fans, and natl pundits will tell you that the line is stronger because of all the injuries to their week 1 starters last season. All those guys are back which is why they lost all of those dudes to the portal. It could/should be better if those guys who stepped in were clearly beaten out by the original injured players who have returned but I agree with you that losing starter caliber linemen to the portal should mean thatsecond team depth has taken a hit.

2, 3, and 4 started in the playoffs because of injuries to the original starters.

A few of those guys are back.

It’s not as dire a picture as you’re portraying here.

I know that but it’s not as strong as it could be with them back. If those guys returned they wouldn’t have a true freshman leading the battle for the starting right guard.

I agree injuries happen all the time, evident to the reason those 3 guys, who transferred, had to start in the playoffs. Now going into this season their projected right guard goes down in an ATV accident, and now there is a true freshman in the lead to win that staring job to replace him.

So even if all of those guys return to pre injury form, the fact that they could be staring a true freshman at right guard makes their offensive line worse than the 2024 line.

I did not get the impression he was either, more Schiano disciple. We may see both, likely dependent on what each guy does well, but it won't get fancy.

The emphasis is on empowering the player to embrace their inner violence.

I am inclined to agree with you. Especially at that position. Even CiCi had to round into form as TF. I would be happier if we had a guy in the middle coming in that had proven high level production. Let's hope Scott and Moten show that we have been developing our interior D-Line come 08/31

Miami does have that player, it’s David Blay. He consistently handled double teams last season and was still very productive. That young guy will have a long night trying to move Blay off his spot.

David Blay 2024:
  • 2024 Stats: 46 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks at NT taking on multiple blockers nearly every down
  • First Team All Conference USA
  • All-American (Phil Steele Honorable Mention)

Oh I hear you and I hope the gap discipline and communication are there. Last time I heard a defensive philosophy speak to "get up field, penetrate, see ball/get ball" was Manny and his D.
