Seems to me the DL plays with less moves and skill than the last couple of DL coaches, but it didn't seem strikingly worse. How do you guys think he's doing as a DL teacher and as a recruiter?

Our DE recruits are kind of under the radar but if you don't see some high ceilings I don't know what to tell you. Unfortunately we got shafted by Height and Auburn but I like these prospects.
Bigger issue was Garvin not wanting to play this season and Patchan just being awful/no speed rush/no moves/no athleticism/no nothing but of course he has "gap discipline".
 
Don't love his ability to coach technique and develop players, but I think his recruiting has been pretty good. We have much bigger problems like Baker and Rumph (can't recruit) on defensive staff. Don't even get me started on the offensive staff.

I'm not a fan as a position coach. I've mentioned it a few times. Less explosive plays for the Dline outside of Rousseau. I felt like Kool prioritized pass rush, which we got really good at but gave up big plays in the run game. I felt Simpson improved the run D but still had our DEs eat on pass downs. I felt our DTs were non-existent as pass rusher most of the year and the DEs would disappear far too often.

Seems like a likable guy on the trail.

I have less qualms about the quality of our DL recruiting and moreso that I don't see them playing with the same craft as they did under the last two DL coaches. Looks like you are seeing the same.

Good assessment of the last two. Simpson was the best DL coach we've had since the one season where we had Palermo and he trained Calais and some of other guys. Petri was a good one too.
 
Simpson and Kool are legit. Kool didn’t end well and he apparently didn’t recruit worth a **** but nobody can argue the on field product he produced. Tough guys to follow given what kinda coaches we typically bring in. (Coaches that we shouldn’t bring in)

Man, that was a good tutorial on pass rush! Urban. Why did he have to coach for so long at two of Satan's teams?

Anyway, the DL coach is one of the top two most important position coaches on a team. I feel like we could do better than Stroud, but that's why I am asking, because some of you guys really know your stuff technically speaking when it comes to these football details. Seems like the overall consensus is that we could do worse, but Stroud is nothing special.
 
The reality is that losing Gerald Willis hurt. Unfortunately, no one could fill those shoes. W/out G Will, it would have been unfair to believe the line would be as effective as last year, regardless of who's coaching.

Seriously! I don't care that he can't recruit. If we get a dominant pass rush and it aids in us winning 10 or more games, we'll get enough quality DL.

I'd prefer Simpson, but I assume we won't get him back from the NFL.

I'll take coach stroud over coach kool anyday of the week, coach kool coached d-lines were trash against the run, and it didnt just start at UM. This is why coach richt had no problem with him leaving, plus his recruiting was trash. I use to laugh at the people trying to annoint coach kool as the "best d-line coach in America", i always wondered where they get that from. Once jess simpson came in, immdeiately you knew our run defense was going to be elevated because he definitely was teaching more hand placement and hip flipping techniques. Now on to coach stroud, he's a better d-line coach against the run than coach kool, he doest care to much about having his d-tackles rack up sacks or getting that type of pressure, he coaches his d-lines to work more as a unit than as individuals, so they all have specific duties, but he has consistently had one d-end rack up sacks, so he'll get a guy or 2 on his d-lines to consistently play at a high level, but his d-lines are about unison. With the way he's been able to recruit tho, our d-lines under him have the ingredients to consistently be dominant, but as of now, he's an above average d-line coach and i sad tbis about coach stroud before the season, i dont mind us having less sacks for a better run defense, cause once you stop the run, it forces offenses to get out of their comfort zones.

But also with the way coach stroud teaches d-linemen, it is important for the linebackers coach to be on the same page with him, they will have the opportunity to cleanup easier. And not to many d-line coaches can say the 1st overall draft pick in any nfl draft was a d-lineman that they coached, coach stroud has that on his resume. And from the way greg rousseau actually performed this year, its consistent with coach strouds history, and many on here for some reason think garvin didnt have a good year for some reason, lol, but he actually had his best year when you combine what he did vs the run as well as his qb pressures. We good and solid with coach stroud, with a better d-coordinator and better linebacker play, this defense should remain tough!

A very well reasoned post. Stroud is a solid coach with experience. He isn't an elite DL coach but as you said, the key here if he stays will be a better DC and LB coach. Right now we don't have those ingredients. Baker, Patke and Banda must go imo. Rumph is a good teacher but he is lost on the trail so the question with Rumph becomes is it worth it to keep a good teacher who can't find any students?

I'd rather have the good teacher anyday of the week, and team up on the recruiting aspect of it! This is why having a 1st time headcoach is a problem, because he'll definitely look to fire a non recruiter because he cant groom coach rumph on recruiting cause #1, he wasnt exactly tearing up the recruiting trail himself, so of course if the headman has never been known as an above average recruiter, he cant help coach rumph either, but its easy to be a better coach and get better at recruiting than vice versa. Plus who else on the coaching staff is actually certified in what the UM culture is suppose to be, he doesnt have to try and be a Cane, he already is one!
