We all knew coming into the VT game that our strength was big plays and their vulnerability was giving up big plays because they play a lot of Cover 0. Spread them out and it opens up running lanes for the qb. Mark of a great coach to adapt the offense to exploit a defenses weakness instead of insisting on "his system." I know Richt wants to to have a strong run game, but rather than having Homer run into the teeth of the D, he got the run going with the qb.

So what's ND's defensive flaw? They are statistically among the worst at pass defense. Miami is currently ranked #35 in pass defense. ND is ranked #90 . Our rank also doesn't tell whole story because although we give up some yards we also create negative plays on D when it counts. #5 in team sacks. ND is #50. INTs- Miami #7 , ND tied with 10 other teams at #42 . No secret that ND has a stout run game, but we can chew them up in the pass game. They aren't a ball hawking D nor do they terrorize a QB. Just your standard stout Midwest defense.
Nothing we shouldn't be able to handle with our edge at wrs. I think Dallas is the X factor - they will double up on AR82 and have a plan for Berrios, but Dallas should feast out of the backfield catching the ball with running room.

I also looked at their rush yards per game. When they played a good D in Georgia they only had 55 yards rushing, but 318 against NCST. Looks like we can stack the box and make their qb throw to try to beat us. Ill take our chances in this situation. To me it will come down to how our OL run blocks. If they can come to play like they did against VT we should be able to put up more than we did on VTs D.
 
From everything I read and watched, VT’s secondary was the best we’ll face all year (sans possible playoff opponent).

I think we continue to throw to set up the run.
 
We need to sellout on the run. This will and should be the hardest test for our db's. Load the box and force Wimbush to beat us with his arm. If he does, so be it.
 
Herndon should have a huge day. They have a major weak spot midrange over the middle. Wake took advantage of this. On d stack the box and put our corners on islands. Always have a spy on Wimbush. Game very winnable.
 
Our ends are critical in this game, we can’t afford them to rush upfield and let their QB takeoff. Must contain, key on run and make him beat us from he pocket.

While every phase of the game will be important, the keys to winning this game are:

Stop the Power run game by stacking the box, wrapping up properly and gang tackling. We need to see 3-4 Miami players in on as many tackles as possible. As Miami 224 said, our ends have to be disciplined and keep contain and key on the run. I'll take our corners vs Wimbush any day. We simply have to slow down their power run game and prevent long runs by form tackling, gang tackling and putting a spy on Wimbush. Our DLine and our LBs have to be disciplined and wrap up when tackling. They will be physical in the trenches and both the RBs & Wimbush are a load to tackle so we need to excel at bringing them down and avoid missed tackles.
 
Key in on the run game and make em beat us through the air. If they can, props to them but I like those odds

Wimbush's completion percentage is 51%
Their top WR has just 354 yards on the year, and that's with playing one more game than us.

Hopefully we play with the lead and forces them to abandon the run earlier than they hoped and we can allow the crowd to create that tough atmosphere!!
