We need COACHES who can actually scheme and out smart another staff. We don't need people to go into homes like used car salesman, get top talent and then waste in on the field. Shannon did plenty of that which is why we sucked as a program and we're watching all the early 2010's canes play in the NFL right now after producing literally nothing in Miami.

Number of 4 star or 5 star players on roster

Wisconsin : 7 (yes, as in SEVEN)

Miami: 34

Game Results last week: Miami got *** kicked 35-3

is our defense the most talented? no. But we finished #1 in major key areas like TFL and passing defense. Why you ask? because of COACHING.

Does recruiting matter? sure. but not nearly as much as coaching does and all this talk about having to find someone to recruit is just absurd. The best recruiting strategy is to win and you do that by having the best coaches. Until we can dominate like Clemson, Bama, and even UGA recently we won't compete for top recruits.

Give me an awkward air raid OC who can't formulate a sentence or win over recruits in homes and then proceeds to drop 40 every Saturday any day of the week

Elite teams do both.
very true

the much more natural path for sustained success would be to not base hires on recruiting prowess

saban didn't have the level of talent he has now when he won his first NC, neither did Clemson

they exceed expectations and out perform their talent level to reach the big one and then sustained success brings recruiting

i'm not saying recruiting isn't important. but half the board in every single thread says "hire this guy, he's an awesome recruiter"

our OC needs to be an elite PLAYCALLER, who gives a **** about recruiting if you have someone who can make it happen no matter what. Recruiting would take care of itself

and how did they get to that talent level

by winning off of A+ coaching from Saban, Dabo + vennables , etc

hence my point
nah you need both .... Michigan state and Washington are well coached but they can’t pull in top 10classes and hence will never go further than a token CfB playoff appearance every 10 years

How many CFB playoff appearances do we have?

They aren't in the hotbed of recruiting like we are so it's not comparable

Washington is probably in one of the worst places in the country as it's polar opposite from South Florida talent and Michigan State recruits against two power houses that are bigger brands

We're 30 mins away from elite kids in every direction that just want to go to a winning program

This. You need a few guys on staff not 50% of the staff or more but a couple that can really go out there and bring in the Jimmys and Joes that their counterparts can really mold and put in positions to succeed

Or they want to get paid and go to a winning program.

At some point this staff has to realize the top guys are not coming here consistently. They will say the right things and be on campus and then go to the SEC. It will happen again tomorrow and people will fall for this crap again. Get great coaches to scheme and recruit other parts of the country a bit harder for high end kids. The CFP teams have a ton of good players from other parts of the country. Find some of them, win some games consistently and then see if you can get into the CFP. Be realistic people. The CFP is not realistic right now. Can we figure out if the coach can, you know, coach and recruit a little.

It actually shows south FL kids were overrated as a hole a few years ago. Kids like Dallas Crawford, Tracy Howard, Ermon Lane, Davante Phillips, Travis Rudolph, Etc etc have been vastly overrated. That’s leveling out now. The whole south FL 3 stars are 4 everywhere else isn’t true. There’s as many misindentified recruits here that are two stars who end up being studs as there are 4 star busts.

Rudolph was a 3 star so not sure he qualifies

He's also in the NFL which is certainly not the norm for 3 stars elsewhere

For everyone that you gave there are another few highly touted south Florida prospects Killin it for Ohio State,Bama, Clemson, and georgia

Who are these elite recruiters on the Oklahoma and Notre Dame staffs?

Doing an internet search to find out doesn’t count ...

Teams win. Recruits come. Coaches get credit for being good recruiters.

This stuff ain’t as complicated as y’all make it.
For starters Lincoln Riley is an elite recruiter, he has them recruiting at Oklahoma like they never did before at Oklahoma, he’s running laps around bob stoops. Just look how loaded their class is the last 2-3 years. This year they got a 5 star qb and will have 3 5 star receivers when Jadon haselwood commits there tommorow. Who does that?

Brian kelly has put together a good recruiting staff too, look at their average ranking per recruit the last couple of years, it’s really good

You do realize OU has been in the playoffs tha last 2 seasons, and that Stoops had OU as a top 5-10 program before that, right?

And why wasn’t Brian Kelly able to get these top 20 classes as the HC at UC?

It’s not as deep as you’re making it.

If you win at a major school, recruits will come. Regardless of who is on your staff.

Saban gets kids when their lead recruiters leave for other jobs. That’s because the kids are picking the HC and the winning program.

Who is the “ace recruiter” that has Justin Fields going to Ohio State?

Has nothing to do with “ace recruiters”.

I agree winning certainly helps, not dismissing that but I’m just saying you have to have the dogs on the trail. Look at the perennial top 10 recruiting programs, they always have dogs on the trail

My point exactly

I want the best OC

If that's Scott then great, but sick of people wanting him for his "recruiting prowess"

People aren't picking Clemson because they like Scott. They are picking them Because they have been in the playoff four straight years and they've won 10 + games for the last decade
