Starting to think Richt

As time has gone on, I think Richt was way overrated. Think of all the financial and administrative support offered in Athens and he couldn't get that program to the next step. Here, he didn't have that and his coaching was exposed.

That 2012 UGA team was his last real good team. Lost to Bama by 4. After that his style of play was going downhill.

retired because he knew our Admin was killing the program and there was no way he could save it.
"It's a mess down here."
If Manny didn't step in and get the portal gang and late signees we would have been fugged. Hate Manny all we can, but he did a good job righting the ship when we had NO Momentum after Whisky waxxed us.

I disagree. What failed richt is what has failed our last 3 coaches. Serious nepotism.

Richt was the only Miami coach ever to suffer from nepotism. And actually, other than his mentor Bobby Bowden, I can’t think of a coach at another school who’s ever suffered nepotism.

Diaz and Golden might have refused to fire bad assistants because they were way too close to them, but that’s not nepotism. Nepotism is within the family. And Shannon actually was fairly active in firing coordinators, although he wasn’t good at finding replacements.

Was literally killing him. He wasn't in great health, look at him now he's doing great and looks fantastic. He looked so best up by the end here

He retired because he was lazy and sucked as coach.

He wanted to have a staff with his son as QN coach, and Banda and Patke as co-DCs. He retired because the admin rose a stink about that.

I am sure Mark Richt did more for this program than you ever will and the best thing he probably did was leave when he did, in the manner that he did. It was total class and gave us some fighting chance going forward.

We may already have blown that, but that is not his fault.

Don't get it twisted.

Mark Richt was a fantastic coach. His record at Georgia proves that. The fact that he couldn't win at Miami says more about Miami than it does about Richt.

I agree with OP and been saying it - Richt retired because he realized it wasn't possible to win here anymore. His 2017 season is pretty much the pinnacle of what the program is capable of these days

2016 was a better season than 2017, TBH. Richt’s teams were getting worse every year.

And his team would probably have been worse than ever in 2019 with the Baker/Patke combo.

If Richt would've hired a competent OC and QB coach he would still be here, and probably winning. He would've had to replace Manure last year but that wouldn't have been too difficult.

The first two years he didn't suck, won our only bowl game in a long *** time, won our first ever coastal tile, had a ten win season, but did fall apart the third year. And got our indoor facility built which really helps with recruiting. Richt had us in the top 20 his first two years, wasn't lazy had a heart issue which does wear you out, I know cause I had one, not fun.

He retired because he was burned out and took the job for the wrong reasons. He didn’t want to rebuild um. He wanted to show uga he can call plays. They should have given butch his shot.

The staff he chose when manny left told us everything we need to know. He was done. Patke and panda as CO-DCs would have put us in the ground

It still blows my mind that was even considered at all. Making Banda and patke co-DCs. Zero qualifications for either to be named DC, so just name them both co-DCs. Officially iirc. This was also their decision same time as the 11 minute coaching search. Total amateur hour.

It's almost like Richt was trying to get fired so he could get his buy-out and the admin still wouldn't do anything lol. He's Like "what do I have to do to get them to fire me? I won't fire my son, I actually hired these 2 bozos as DCs-***** it I quit just keep the money"

That’s false. Nepotism doesn’t have to pertain to only family. It can be from anybody you’re close to. And when i say the last 3 coaches i don’t mean Shannon because he did fire multiple coaches. I meant golden with d’nofrio. Richt with his son. And diaz with Banda and patke.

If you had nearly frozen to death watching the Pinstripe Bowl like I did you would know why he left. Never saw so little energy in a team -- until FIU. Everyone had given up. I think even Manny admitted this later.

I honestly believe he "promoted" them because he knew he was done. Richt wasn't green or stupid but looked completely different than when he started just 3 years prior. He had clout to get a top DC but probably just assumed whoever was coming after him could do the legwork.

It's too bad we got him in richtirement and being stubborn. He could've done really really well just cruising along and fully devoting himself to recruiting but noooo he had to prove he was some offensive savant.
With a modern OC/QB coach we would've been a consistent Coastal Champion and built from there.
I think we tried to get him when Larry got fired but he turned us down. We already sucked by the time Coker got done with us, but that would have been Mark's best chance and maybe ours.

That lazy sucky coached managed a win over Urban, Dabo and Nick Saban. He also won two SEC titles and more SEC East titles while winning over 80% of his games.
