Starting line-up?

Given how good Jake was last year at SS I have to imagine that Sheehan has simply been lights out to make this move. A true defensive weapon on the same level as a Torres in CF to make this bold of a move

Time will tell
Should be fine early on either way. If it doesn't look right, Jake can always shift back.

Jd's logic/reasoning around the five minute mark of CanesInSight's new video regarding the change in the middle infield is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Not only do the statistics invalidate his argument, but common sense does too. Vance had a defensive run saved (DRS) statistic of 2.67 (246th in the country) in 2025, which accounts for the spectacular play that JD seems to be enamored with, while committing 15 errors. OG had a DRS statistic of 12.03 (14th in the country) while committing 7 errors. The numbers prove that Jake not only makes the spectacular play more often, but the routine as well. Let's take the numbers out of it and approach this from a pure baseball perspective. What most often derails innings is the routine error, not the missed chance at a spectacular play. While spectacular plays often create huge momentum swings, I think if you ask any pitcher on the staff which they would rather have, most would take the routine play every time. JD openly admits Vance may make the routine error more often than OG, confirming either JD has forgotten what really wins baseball games or JD has decided to ignore what most fans, coaches, and major college baseball publications see, Jake Ogden is a top 3 shortstop in the country this year. Vance is likely an excellent addition to the squad and I am very excited about our potential lineup this year, but moving OG to second base seems akin to falling in love with a brand new stallion while doing a complete disservice to the reliable, steady, and quite frankly better horse in the stable. I hope JD rectifies this blatant misappropriation of infield resources before we end up with another disappointing season where we sit on our hands and wonder why this wasn't fixed early on. In any event, go Canes!

My abbreviated version of your statistically supported argument is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I don't get it.

The only thing I can guess is that Sheehan had trouble making the transition/turning DPs(?).

Ogden looks noticeably bigger this year imo, and maybe he lost some of his range.

Peralta also appears to have found the food court.

Ogden fielded .800 in the summer before he came to Miami in the Coastal Plains League. 15 errors in 30 games playing SS, 2B, and 3B.

Guys improve.

I talked to the coach Ogden played for with the Florence Flamingos and was saying there's no chance he was even an average SS for us and i echoed that. We were very wrong. Won't make that mistake again until I see something concerning with my own eyes. Sebastian and Erick were right about his ability at short.

Thats my hope.

I'm just not convinced these guys don't manage by hope more than they should.

I also hope Laz is a better starting option than Rob...

This is where I am on it.

It would be one thing if Ogden had only played 2B since fall and Sheahan had only played SS, but they always had them together this spring in one alignment or the other. If they want to try it for the ten games before Florida, they’ve had plenty of time with the reverse if need be.

What I took away from the interview was that there's about a 50% chance Sheehan plays tomorrow. He said he got hurt yesterday in practice. I would expect Gabo Milano to start at 2B tomorrow, and if he does. I don't see him giving up that spot

Sheahan or Ogden are going to play 2B if healthy. Not really much difference if Ogden is at SS and Sheahan at 2B or vice versa.

Last year Ogden had 263 chances, with a certain number that were hit to him that went for hits etc. on the infield.

Dorian Gonzalez had 245 chances at 2B.

With the tools that Sheahan possesses being slightly louder than Ogden at SS, I've got no problem with the move. The pivot and receiving throws on stole base attempts are different at 2B as well and Ogden fits the prototype there just fine.
