Back in 2007(?), VT opened their season vs USC at FedEx field in Landover, MD. Several Hokies invited me to pre-game tailgate and game so we congregated with one particular Hokie who had tailgate setup around his fifth-wheel. We were having a wonderful time when this huge Winnebago with USC banners pulled up beside us. A few minutes later a guy rocking a tux shows up and starts preparing their tables, lining up the wine bottles and glasses and start prepping shrimp ****tails while the grills start firing. My Hokie friends and I were "WTF?". Lol.

After reading all the replies, I think I am happy that we still have American universities that care more about academics than athletics. It’s our variety as Americans that makes this country great. We should not all be interested in the same things.

I’m equally happy that UM and a lot of other universities have made college sports so much fun to watch.

Good for Stanford and Harvard and Yale. And good for UM. To each their own.

I had no idea USC was like that too.

The West Coast is weird. Must be something in the Pacific Ocean.

Yales is the same way. I went to a tailgate in 1992 when my best friend from high school was playing at Yale. There were very nice tents with people eating shrimp and other seafood and drinking wine and mixed drinks. It wasn’t a beer and hot dogs crowd.

I don’t think it’s a West Coast thing as much as it’s about what culture exists around sporting events.

Ivy League makes sense. I just had heard from USC friends that they were more like us, and not at all like Stanford.

In fairness, I'm not sure if what we encountered that day was/is representative of the USC fan/alum base. Landover is close to DC, so this may have been alums who work with lobbyists and similar assorted douchebags. The VT folks thought they were UVA folks in Trojan clothes. Lol.
Keep in mind that my VT friend's are from southwest VA, so in addition to the typical tailgate fare, they shared animals they had recently killed like venison and turkeys.

Interesting. My USC friends went there in the early-to-mid 2000s, so maybe things have dampened since, for obvious reasons.

Speaking of UVA folks though, I have a bunch of friends from there and they are funny too. One friend once bragged about the “crazy tailgate party” they once had where they started drinking mimosas at 11.

Been to UVA several times. My wife says it looks like a Talbot's shoot. They really do dress up
 
They hired Andrew Luck to lure money into football. I think they want to be relevant.

They "care" in the same way any large corporation would "care" when they hire a consultant to market a "change" they are making. If that pays off for them, they can say "look we're great it worked." If it doesn't work, they can say well the consultant we hired didn't execute properly.

Right, so then they don’t need to win a championship, or even make the CFP. They just need to be profitable - meaning they need to be able to pay for all their other sports too.

And that’s fine, if that’s all they care about. Plenty of schools are like this. But too many ACC schools are like this now, so we need to GTFO.

And that's the crux of it. They don't care anymore about it than it being a line item that shouldn't lose money
