Stanford about to go all in?

Then I guess the Ivy League is gearing up to become THE Super Conference.

I'm waiting for a bunch of MIT nerds to field a team, and actually out scheme the bigger, stronger, faster teams. You know, sorta like Egghead Jr.

Do you mean because of the distance? Because I always thought living in Pablo Alto was a draw

Distance. It's also not "southern college town" like Athens, Auburn, Knoxville, etc...Some of these kids growing up in small towns will have to adjust to 5h flight home, different culture/food, etc...

Could be a draw for some, but Palo Alto doesn't strike me as a place most football players will drop everything to attend (even with a comparable bag).

If you've ever been to EPA, it's a whole different story

Still have to live in Palo Alto. That's not for everyone (particularly those from the South)
They were a wagon when Harbaugh was there, and even the early days of Shaw. And they were recruiting nationally, even with the academic stuff. They get the coach figured out and there's no reason they can't be a problem again, even if some kids from the deep south don't want to go there.

Definitely a culture change. What Stanford maybe better suited to attract are the SoCal kids who are willing to go to Eugene.

That Twitter post is just rage bait for the dumbest people alive who have decided schools like Harvard are a negative to society.
Not necessarily a "negative". Great things have been accomplished throughout history at the Ivies...but life has kot only caught up, but is passing them by...

There are deep warts and "they" aren't all they appear to be, nor are "they" near as elite and smart as the legend supposes.

My sister is a Department Chair at Harvard and heads a Research Lab. I welcome the robust discussion to the contrary. Brilliant in her field of study, dumber than a bag of hammers on the bottom of a river in almost all things "life". A significant portion of the student body is there because mommy and daddy wrote a check, not because of their academic potential.

They recruit from a very limited pool of high school talent. The same pool includes Vandy, Duke, BC, Northwestern, Cal, Rice, and Notre Dame. At best, you can't have more than 2-3 schools winning on any given season, with probably only one seriously competing for top-10.

If Cal, Duke, and Stanford decide to fully commit to football, the SEC gonna take another hit.

Those schools got DIFFERENT kind of money, but they still want to preserve their academic tradition. But with Andrew Luck running the show at Stanford now, you gonna start to see them magically starti finding the funds to compete with the big boys.

Good buddy of mine in the tech field (SMU alum) said this ain't no vanity gig for Luck either. He's pretty much living at the University and traveling with the team.

Money wise, the SEC cannot compete with the ACC or Big 10. ****, they might not even be on the Big 12 level these days either.
I toured Wake Forest with my daughter recently.
That campus looks like a country club. $2b endowment. They love their status as a division one sports school and are going to go all in as well.

We will see.

All the conferences have a massive spread between the teams with lots of $$$ and those without. Texas A&M and Texas may have more money than anyone.

$50 million gets them started but can they sustain that?

Hahaha

$50m is a weekend at Bernie’s for their alum. Not only is that the case, if anyone can invest $50m to make it $500m, it would be that group.

Personally, I loved when Stanford had a good team. Would be awesome to have some strong academic teams kicking the **** out of the sec.

GORGEOUS CAMPUS.

Ended up as Empiricalette's #2 choice...nothing bad...just her heart was #1 elsewhere.

Great school...library is impressive.

Vandy has $MU / TCU $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I suppose it will become a business decision...what level of resourcing is needed for what level of "acceptable return"?

Folks didn't become miliionaires/billionaires because they **** money away.

Lots of schools are investing more in athletics now. Illinois just got a 100 million dollar gift from one of their alum.

Book smart vs Street smart.
I've only ever met one Ivy grad who was both book smart AND street smart. Not to say that there aren't more. Not to say I've interacted with thousands of them. I have though interacted with a couple dozen of them. All but the one I mentioned were 100% exactly as you described.
