Stacy Searles Ol coach

Excellent hire, IMHO.

Won a NC under Satan, was promoted at UGA and Texas (titles to keep him around?), and improved a horrid line at VT.

Also reputed to be a strong recruiter.

I like it. I like it a lot.

This. I can see why some of the internet cretins are reserved about Diaz, but this guy is a solid hire. Kool was a solid hire. Brown was a solid hire. Hopefully the SC coach will be a solid hire. Perhaps a solid DB coach. In any case, Searles is a competent, professional coach who has coached at the biggest programs in the country. We have upgraded across the board. This is a project, there will be firings and new hires in the years to come if someone isn't cuttin it. But this guy will 100% improve our OL....period.

Finding it weird to be excited about the coaching staff, recruiting and winning %. This dude has a good resume. Experience with some successful coaches and programs. Wish I could attend every practice before the spring game. Bet the players are going to be positive and excited about being coached by real coaches.

Did we just hire the George O'Leary of OL coaches?

hokiesports.com :: Football :: Stacy Searels

...before becoming a fourth-round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 1988. He played two seasons with the Chargers before moving to the Miami Dolphins in 1990, where they made the playoffs that season.

Can't find him here:

It always comes down to how much credence you give to a bio puff piece. I discount them by about 80%. It's amazing how many coaches get credited for "developing" player X in bio puff pieces. I mean did Larry Coker really "develop" Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders?

This guy is a freaking OL savage! What an upgrade!

Here's an excerpt from an article on Kirby Smart where he talks about coaching under Nick Saban:
Kirby Smart: How the new Georgia football coach rose at Alabama - Fortune

"Fortune: You were only down in Miami the one year.

KS: I was down there the one year, but I knew he (Nick Saban) wasn’t as happy as he was at LSU. He kind of had groomed the LSU thing to right where he had a great staff. He had guys he really liked: Dooley, Jimbo, Will, Stacey Searles. He had a great staff. He’d kind of had a machine going because he had kids coming in, good players every year."

when is any fanbase upset when an ol coach leaves? im sorry but most fans couldn't tell u who the ol coach even is most times.

not to defend searles but come on, georgia has always had good olines under richt. texas " stats looked good" but can't rely on them

if u read his bio it states his teams were always good on oline. finishing at georgia in top 25 yr fewest sacks and rush yds a game. so not a bad hire. just not who some on this board wanted.

Here's what I wrote on New Year's Eve, so it isn't getting excited about a guy after we've actually hired, if anyone cares:

Stacy Searels was another OL coach under Richt at Georgia. He left to take a lateral job at Texas though and then was relieved of his duties after a few seasons. He is now at Virginia Tech as their OL coach in 2014 and 2015. He might be available due to the uncertainty with their coaches as well. I don't know anything about the relationship with Richt though since he left for a lateral job.

Before Georgia he was at LSU, so he knows big-time coaching.

Searels had four players drafted that he brought in (Clint Boling, Justin Anderson, Cordy Glenn, Ben Jones) and had four all-conference players during his time there (Boling, Glenn, Jones, and Chris Burnette). He also brought in Trinton Sturdivant and got him ready to start as a true freshman- becoming the first true freshman T to start opening day for Georgia. Knee injuries ruined his career. He also developed a player- Kolton Houston- who had multiple leg injuries, but was good enough to beat out 5-star OT John Theus who was benched for Houston. Theus was moved over to LT after another injury, but never did beat out Houston.

He would be my top choice if I knew anything about the relationship between he and Richt.

Some of y'all b*tch about anything, just stfu and let richt cook man.... Always questioning something, is he good? Why has he bounced around so much? Man quit being so apprehensive..... Obviously he knows what he is doing if he played in the league a number of years, coached at lsu, Uga, Texas and vt....

Certain guys on this board are professional contrarians. They have to find a wart on everything. Probably gave up on girls when they found out they have to take $hits like the rest of us.

I think that people can look at the recent hires in a variety of different ways. They can spin different numbers to their benefit. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I'm going to get blasted for this but something kind of ironic would be Art Kehoe getting hired somewhere else and the fans on that message board being incredibly excited about it. They would say things to justify the hire. Things like:

-He was in a bad situation with Golden so take his performance with a grain of salt
-He was able to produce Feliciano, Henderson, Linder, Flowers all players starting as rookies in the NFL and performing admirably
-Yearby had a 1,000 yard season and Duke is the all time leading rusher under Kehoe
-We were in the top 25 for sacks given up

When you look at it that way, one might think he is a great hire. But we all think he underperformed. Again, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. He didn't do all that great but Golden is an absolute piece of **** and did no favors in helping Kehoe.

Art's weakness has always been recruiting. He favors overachievers similar to how he played at Miami. All the guys you mentioned other than Flowers were ranked by Stoutland. He hit gold 15-plus years ago with the two Canadians and a walk-on. He's long term successful has always been sketchy. A lot of his early time he wasn't even the head position coach. He was the assistant line coach. I like Art a lot and hope he gets another gig. He'll be fine.

Is SMD really that dense? Of course some SID flunkie is going to come out and say Kehoe wasn't offered a job; this saves face. Kehoe declined and to short circuit any backlash, they say it wasn't offered. Kehoe isn't going to come out and say "Oh Yes, they did" because he knows bad mouthing a D1 college sports department is not good for future job prospects and Kehoe may want to continue coaching, however few his options may be...

This "Journalist" ever live in the real world?

Wow! Hope so - dude is an amazing OL coach IMO.

Based on?

Vag Tech has been known for their incredible running game and great pass protection the last few years. LOL
VT's 2014 OL stats are an abortion. There's no getting around that. Their 2015 stats look better though. Still pretty bad at pass protection but not awful in run blocking:
FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2015 NCAA OFFENSIVE LINE STATS

Definitely some red flags as you and others have pointed out but I'm keeping an open mind. He can't be worse than Kehoe. And if he isn't getting the job done I trust Richt to replace him.

JJ, I watched a lot of VT football, and their line play the last couple years has been a disaster. They don't run the ball well like they used to. And their pass protection has been a nightmare. Many kill shots on their QBs.

I just don't want to get into the "he can't be worse than _____(fill in the guy from the worst staff in the history of college football)" way of thinking. We don't just need upgrades from our last staff. We need mega upgrades.

Who hires him will determine his worth. I'd be shocked if he lands in the P5.

I hear you. There are definitely reasons to not love the hire, but OL coaches are pretty difficult to evaluate. At worst he's probably a good recruiter and average to above average technician. If Richt nails the S&C hire we should be okay.

Yeah, call it the Brian Williams effect; people need to examine what is written about them. I remember the first prior enlisted, ******, and formerly designated Surface Warfare Officer Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Jeremy Boorda, committed suicide in '96 because of two "V" devices he wore on ribbons was called into question...A guy who achieved so much took his own life because he perceived he had dishonored the Navy...Very sad.

Why has he bounced around so much if he's so great? Wouldn't all these great programs do what it takes to hang onto such a great coach?

Looks eerily similar to a Jethro type who bounces around and has an impressive looking résumé that doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

Cause he's a position coach and you move to increase salary base.

If he's so great why didn't the current employer offer him a raise to keep him? What happened with Saban?

I really need to spend some time putting some posts about Richt recruiting together, but under Stacy Searles they recruited 15 OL. Of those 15 OL, three were outright busts (Brian Harden, Chris Little, Brent Benedict). Harden averaged 3 stars, Little was 3.67 stars, Benedict was 4.00 stars.

Justin Anderson was 6-5, 320 and worked his way into a starter. He was eventually drafted in the 7th round after starting 29 games. Consensus 4.00 stars.
Clint Boling was 6-5, 270 and was 2.67 stars. Started 49 games and was an All-American taken in the 4th round.
Tanner Strickland was 6-4, 315 and consensus 3.00 stars. Started 3 games, but was solid depth.
Trinton Sturdivant 6-5, 280 and consensus 4.00 stars. 21 starts, but started as a true freshman at LT. Knee injuries ruined his career or he'd have been an AA.
Cordy Glenn was 6-6, 315 and averaged 3.33 stars (ESPN rated him as 2 stars). 50 career starts and was a high 2nd round pick. Plays LT in NFL.
AJ Harmon was 6-4, 308 and was rated consensus 4.00 stars. Solid depth, but beaten out and left team.
Jonathan Owens was 6-5, 295 and was rated 3.00 stars. He made a start, but Georgia had their guys at OL and he left team.
Chris Burnette was 6-2, 300 and was rated 4.00 stars. He made 37 starts and was all-SEC.
Austin Long was 6-5, 270 and consensus 4.00 stars. He never made a start, but was depth and stayed with program.
Kolton Houston was 6-5, 265 and rated 3.67 stars. He made 43 starts and would have been an AA if not for knee injuries that lingered entire career.

All tall, developmental type players. Many highly rated kids and he developed almost an entire line of drafted players in five years. Two of the guys not drafted were all-conference type players. You can make your own conclusions based on this information, but he sure did a great job with that OL in my evaluation.

Solid post. Thanks for the info. Like I said earlier, it's difficult to evaluate OL coaches so information like this is helpful. I'm more concerned about the Diaz hire because the stats do not paint a pretty picture but that's for another thread.
