Perry will win, and curious to see if Williams can pass up Rozier in fall
Very constructive post. Perry is over whelming choice of forum to start next year. I agree with you that Williams may surprise and be chosen to be starter in 2018.I’d bet big money on Perry
Perry was reportedly the recruit Richt prioritized above all when he first got here.
Richt refused to name a starter until Perry got on campus.
Richt wanted Perry to win the job last year. This year, I think Perry’s ready (enough) to do so.
He refused to name a starter because he wanted to keep a fire lit under the guys in front of him. Once Perry arrived and Richt discovered he'd never watched film, I guarantee you he didn't want Perry taking the field. The FANS, who had no clue, were the ones begging for Perry to start right away.
Williams is an EE, and is coming in better prepared than Perry did. Perry's jump on Williams will not be a significant one. It will be a huge battle, and whichever QB gets it right between the ears AND makes plays will win the job.
I'm going to put this as gently as I can.
If Perry can't beat out Rosier this off season....he's never going to amount to ****. His path to being the starter could not be any clearer.
Yup. Amazing 2-10 teams like UNC have 3rd string freshman QBs that so far are light years better than anything we have. If Perry aint ready in '18, he's a bust. Has to be the easiest QB slot in the country. Anyone who is half *** can waltz in and start for their career.
Maybe not. I just think he was WAY behind in terms of knowing how to watch film, progress reads, read a D, etc. Wayyyy behind. I wouldn't be shocked if it takes him more than one season to win the job. He's athletically ahead of everyone, but he has a lot of work to do to catch up on the mental aspect. When he does, look the **** out. He will be a good one.
I said it when he signed and I'll say it again. I hope everyone is patient with him and doesn't turn on him when he doesn't win the job as soon as everyone wants/expects. He has the talent, but sometimes that talent takes time to develop. With him and Williams pushing each other, great days are ahead. Just be patient.
This ain't about "winning the job when everyone wants/expects"....it's really rather simple. The only thing standing between Perry and the starting job is a QB who we all now know is completely erratic and not what Richt wants behind center.
I couldn't disagree more and I'll reiterate it one more time...if Perry doesn't beat out Rosier my money is on him never being a starter here and eventually getting passed up by Williams. I'll stand by that prediction the same way I stood by Rosier being the starter LAST off season when everyone thought I was out of my ****ing mind and was buying the Sheriff and true freshman Perry talk.
I completely understand TRUE freshman Nkosi Perry not starting...but given what we have next year I simply won't understand REDSHIRT freshman Nkosi Perry not starting. His time is right now and he'll be given every opportunity to win the job. If he doesn't it will be telling.
Good chance Rosier isn't even here next year. Perry will be the QB, question is if Weldon or Williams are the backups.

I don't see Weldon being ahead of Williams. Williams is the real deal.

Im sure they want to create seperation with him and Perry. A redshirt would be ideal
Imagine what type of numbers a really QB would put up in this offense with all that speed. If Rosier can break Vinnys record imagine with a legit Qb.

The one edge Rosier has on Perry is that he doesn't make a lot of stupid mistakes, because he knows where NOT to throw the ball. Not saying Perry is a turnover waiting to happen, but we honestly have no clue where he is in his development when it comes to reading a D, progressions, etc. Talent wise, we all know it's not even close. Perry is light years ahead of Rosier in that department. I just believe a guy coming in with no real training is further behind than most freshman QBs that have watched some film before coming in. So, will a redshirt season be enough? I sure hope so, for everyone's sake.
What I don't know is how well coached Williams was in high school. Watching his film he LOOKS like a guy that has been coached well, not just relying on his talent. If he was well coached for 3-4 years, and can come in already knowing how to do the things Perry didn't, he has a really good shot at stealing the job.
I'm glad Richt brought in a guy like Williams to push Perry, instead of Perry simply being better than an extremely average Rosier and Shirreffs, he will have to work hard to stay ahead of Williams. Competition is a wonderful thing.

I found myself saying the same thing. What if we had an NFL caliber QB?

For the purposes of THIS offseason...forget Williams. You can't ask/expect a true freshman to come in and be ready to play at this level. It's the same reason why last offseason I knew Perry was never a serious contender for the starting job and that Rosier would win it by default.
The track record for TRUE (not REDSHIRT) FRESHMEN starting isn't good . What the kid from Georgia did this year was an anomaly, an act of God, and can't be expected from Williams. Before anyone gets cute and cites the kid from Bama ask yourself why he didn't get into meaningful action until late in the season...cause he needed all that time to learn the playbook and get acclimated to the point the coaches trusted him.
No sir...this a 2 horse race or maybe a 3 horse race if Weldon shows something. The chances are it comes down to Rosier and Perry and like I said before...it would speak VOLUMES of Perry if he can't win the job. It was pretty obvious just by what happened in that Pittsburgh game with Richt yanking Rosier that any chance he gets to replace him...he will.
The time is NOW for Perry. Plain and simple. There are no excuses and the kid couldn't ask for a better situation. If Perry doesn't win the job THIS offseason then you can go ahead and pencil in Williams for the year after that.

Nosier lead the ACC in Ints

An EE with the frame Williams has, and ability, can and will push for the starting job, especially when the front runner to win that job is a redshirt freshman. Perry basically just has a 7 month jump on him, and nothing more. No game time. No reps with the first team. He has spent his entire time here learning, and SOME of that he should have already had some grasp of.
Now, Richt might want Perry to start, and to redshirt Williams, but if Williams comes in and wins it, he will start. He didn't come here to wait 3-4 years.

So, I should stop expecting/hoping for it, but 90% of the board was clinging to the hope Perry would start from day one? Sure thing, chief. Williams coming in early, and already physically ready, gives him a leg up on what and when Perry came in as. Dude has 8 full months to compete for the job, and his biggest obstacle is a redshirt freshman, yet I am to believe it's impossible?
My belief is that Perry came in so raw that it could very well take him more than one redshirt season to get up to par, and that will allow an EE like Williams to jump into the mix. But hey, what do I know?

That's exactly my point...you should learn from the mistake the majority of the board made LAST year.
TRUE freshman rarely start...and even more rarely do well. You're not even arguing with me at this point, you're arguing with history.
