As a newbie, this may be a stupid question, but who exactly do they play?
Each other? Meaning the offense plays the defense? Or is this a way for backups on both "sides" to play?

Miami's first team offense vs second team defense and first team defense vs second team offense typically. Then it gets mixed up by playing priority and need for reps. Best gauge to evaluate depth chart or starting order.

There are no stupid questions. Only the ones that aren’t asked.

They play each other. Offense against defense. 1st string offense against 1st string defense. They’ll switch it up some where the 1’s will go against 2’s. All the players will usually play.
