The Hurricanes have*been playing football since 1926, and never before --- in terms of margin of*defeat --- have they been engulfed in a tailspin*quite like the one they’re mired in now: Five losses in their past seven games, all five by 18 points or more.

Oh, there have been a lot of blowout losses before but never this many stretched over so few games, and it's pretty staggering when you consider the lofty company this proud program used to keep when it ranked among college football's elite.

For perspective, UM once went 10 seasons without five blowout losses (1984-93). Larry Coker had only three in six years before he was fired.

And there’s this: Against teams from major FBS conferences (even including the Big East), UM is 18-16 in Al Golden’s*three-plus seasons, and seven of those 16 losses have been my margins of 18 or more. His ACC record is 13-12.

So how do former Canes standouts feel today?

“I’m fed up,” said former Canes and NFL defensive back Duane Starks, now a WQAM analyst. “Maybe I have to get over there and [give] them some pointers. [Louisville] is a mediocre team. What does it say about us?”

Starks isn’t alone; other former Hurricanes reacted angrily on Twitter and elsewhere after Monday’s loss in Louisville.

Ex-cornerback Phillip Buchanon has nicknamed Golden “Folden” and tweeted: “Folden is not getting the job done as a head coach or special teams coach. Folden’s leadership was always a major issue here….

“So he brings in a few good assistant coaches, but the changes should have come at the coordinator positions. When you have a lot of time to prepare for a game and your approach and adjustments suck, that’s a major problem.”

Former Canes defensive lineman Allen Bailey added: “Has to be some major changes done.”

Several ex-players took issue with the conservative offensive approach.

Packers executive Alonzo Highsmith tweeted: “Gotta play faster on offense and turn the QB loose. You gotta throw the ball downfield!”

Clinton Portis: “We have too many open playmakers to not open up the field. We have to open it up.”

Gino Torretta, on The Ticket: “I would have lined up in three, four wides and then run the ball. You have to do something to shake their defense.” Torretta said there were several things UM could have done, but did not do,*to make it easier for Brad*Kaaya. Among those he mentioned: Screen passes for Duke Johnson.

Michael Irvin bemoaned: “They know you are afraid to throw the ball!” --- which allowed Louisville to stack*the box. At least Golden had the sense to admit today that UM played too conservatively Monday.

Some former players also questioned defensive decisions.

“No re-routing in this weak 3-4 defense,” Buchanon said on a Twitter rant. “We need to be more aggressive with strong zone blitzes with clearly defined zone responsibilities. The secondary is playing like robots with soft coverage and weak technique. Go back to the 4-3 defense.... The defensive linemen are in offensive linemen stance. We are not fundamentally sound on counters.”

Starks said: “If you are going to have a fourth guy standing up, send him! Don’t have him stand there in limbo.”

Warren Sapp mused, during the game,*that a 3-4 defense “is covering grass if you can’t run or blitz.”

As usual, emotional Dan Sileo erupted on Twitter. “Congrats, Al Golden,” Sileo said. “Canes are now the Temple Owls.”*

Sileo, now a San Diego radio host who often goes overboard in his criticism, added: "Golden used the Shapiro card for three years. Team is awful."Sports Buzz

Al Golden has been historically bad at Miami, and has set records for poor performances.

It's a disgrace how poorly coached this team is.

I can't believe we had the ability to find someone who could take what Shannon left and make it worse, great job by the administration.

I am glad the former players are speaking up,we as fans notice how vanilla our game plans are. It it sickening,to see our guys that have been playing man to man all of their lives sit back in a 3-4 cover 3 zone all night. That one play on 4th and 5 man front versus a 7 man front with 6 guys 6 yards of the ball is not sound defense ,I have never seen anything like that.

He stood on that podium when he was hired and promised passion, fewer mistakes and competing for championships. OK, we know he was stuck in the moment...but those words have no value at the moment. And recently, using the AQM situation as an example, he's begun to intentionally deceive.

He's currently in a tailspin as the leader of this program, it'll take some brass balls and career defining moves to prevent his crash. He's either got his hands on Eject or he's determined to stay strapped in during this nose dive.

I don't know about worse; with Shannon the talent was draining out of the team and who knows how bad we would have been if he had stayed. With Golden we seem to at least bringing in talented players, but even with more talented players we are playing terribly. Hopefully the administration gives Golden the axe before he has a chance to drain the program of the talent he has injected and a new coach can come in and not have to start from scratch.

Unfortunately for Al, and fortunately for us, losing the alumni is always step 2 in the process of getting fired. Step 3 might be these next two Saturdays when fan attendance will be at about 42k for FAMU and 34k for Arky State. Then a potential embarassing blowout loss to NEB. At that point, I think his fate is sealed barring some miracle where we somehow run the table.

People thought Randy lost his job because we lost to USF that day..Randy lost his job because there were 19,000 people at Sun Life. I was there. It was akward to be there to say the least. You just knew that Randy was going to get fired win or lose. It was embarassing. I was ashamed that it was being shown on TV. And to think he never saw it coming.

I think Al will be the same way. I think he thinks Shalala wont fire him but if we go 6-6/7-5 he is done.

The team is not worse now. The personnel is better than what Randy left. FAR better. The problem is coaching, in particualr DC, OL, OC, and all that falls on the coach.

That article is as good as it gets for the UM fans who want Golden gone. Facts plus former UM greats openly killing Golden in major media outlets equals super effective.

I'd love to see the race angle start to get some traction with the way Shannon only got four years while producing better results on the field. That's the sort of stuff that gets politicians and administrators scared.

This program needs an *****, top to bottom clean house. What I would give for a Chris Petersen or Gary Patterson.

Your dead on. Shannon got fired because of the open fan revolt that had most of those 19k at the usf game openly mocking the program and wearing tshirts killing Shannon.

This thing is on the verge of imploding on Al, and he has no good will with those who remember him begging ped state to hire him a few months ago.

6-6/7-5 gets him fired. I truly believe that.

....Shannon only got four years while producing better results on the field.

The only difference is that Randy Shannon didn't have to follow Randy Shannon. He made his own mess.
True. Then, Shannon would have had Ted Bridgewater and a much better defense the last four years. So the results still would have been better.

Eh, the revisionist history is starting to get a little deep around here. Shannon's fourth year was an abomination. And Al's is looking like it might turn out the same way. But let's not pretend that Shannon was accomplishing something. As he got his own guys in here, the program got worse.
