"A lot" is two words, not one (i.e. "alot" is wrong). Can't read "alot" anymore without wanting to blow my brains out. Allow Lloyd Christmas to demonstrate:

Sounds like a personal problem.

Most of us understand what was meant, and after all, the purpose of a language is to communicate, is it not? So if you communicate effectively, but break an element of the King's English, your transgression couldn't have been all that bad.

There's many things worser than a minor transgression.
