Missed extra point, muffed punt and blocked punt only 3 games in resulting in two opponent TD's and we lost a game to fsu by one point via a missed extra point in recent history. Special Teams got one TD back on a Kick off return but that won't happen too often. Special teams have to be special, even our coverage on kicks has been mediocre. When JJ was our HC he had our kick offs go to the left side of the field and wanted it inbounds and on the 5 yard line or less not in the end zone that pinched the field and our coverage was to keep a narrow lane for any returns. He also had Bennie Blades on special teams as a safety. Bennie laid back just encase the returner beat our coverage.
I have a relative that played for Urban Meyer on special teams at the gator. His special teams coach was Urban Meyer as Urban equated ST to offense and defense. It took me a long time to find out some obscure person is delegated to special teams on our team, well fire him and get a quality special teams coach. If we don't special teams will lose one of our games. It is obvious something is remiss and needs fixing. The reason Urban Meyer coached special teams was he could designate ANY player on the squad to special teams, the RB room, the Receiver Room, and defense made ANY player available to the head coach. I like X as punt returner, the rest is suspect. Borregales is great but having a bad snap is not supposed to happen, our punter had to adjust DURING the A&M game to shorten his punting time, not good.

OP has actually put out some good threads this week. Our special teams is our weak link now. Yes I know we had a return td, Borregales is solid per usual, and our punter has been good so far.

But a muffed punt, blocked punt, missed extra point, catching balls inside the 10 multiple times can’t happen especially as we get into conference play.

Disappointing so far, but the good news is that those are all things that should be fixable and teachable. We now have tape that I'm sure the coaches are using to teach prior to ACC play.

Now catching punts inside the 10 is inexcusable, that is the easiest thing to fix and it worries me that after it happened once nothing has changed.

definitely the weak link of the team at the moment. needs to improve prior to UNC game. Shouldn't be hard to catch a punt - put someone back there who is going to do just that and not muff it. The inside the 10 yard line is ST 101 and should not happen. Borregales is solid, so is Joyce.

I could forgive what X did game once but he literally did it again yesterday. He might be reliable catching the ball but he has to be smarter. I'd give Smith a shot returning punts.

Special teams could use some work, but our weak link is discipline. Too many penalties

Do you think Mario is not aware of this?
Watch his reply to a reporters question on ST's.......some part in jest, but deadly earnest in what has to be fixed to improve our game...
Yes he does, and he will......

Even that return TD has a big red flag - one of our players (Ragu I think) clotheslined a TAMU player. I was shocked the TD didn't get called back. And it was a one point game with TAMU having all the momentum when it happened, so another ST blunder there would have been a massive gut punch.

I would rather have the Special Teams from the season where Feagles couldn't punt the ball more than 15 yards than the one we have now.

Idk why Ragu is playing meaningful snaps

Guy got lucky once and times it perfectly. Next time they changed the snap cadence and that was it. No dice.
The whole point is he has the option to continue down the line, no different than hand in the ground.

Cadence isn't really a thing on ST.

I don't think Mario puts much emphasis on special teams. Looking at the staff directory, we have 3 "special teams analysts" I've never heard of and not one coach assigned to special teams. If he doesn't get this fixed, it's gonna come back to bite us. I think we should consider adding a coach dedicated to STs in some capacity or another, or assigning one of our position coaches to STs. Whatever we're doing there now isn't working.
