Special Teams

The improvement of Specials will make the tough games a lot more bearable. Can't be any worse than the previous clowns.

Specials has been a joke for much longer than Patke. I hated Hartleys units as well
The only good thing about Hartley's unit was the return men. Berrios was as solid as it gets in 2016 & 2017 and Jeff Thomas was great as a return guy in 2018. I think Dallas broke off some long returns too back in 2018.

All I know is Malik Curtis gonna return a kick this year and Manny needs a slap.

our punt returners need one of those collars that shocks them every time they back up inside the 10 to fair catch a punt...

Why Stevenson is on PR will always be something I don't understand. He isn't speedy or shifty. The threat of Rique taking one back is low.

Andy B goin have to show me. Practice quotes are cool but let's see it in game. He was a true fresh so, he def is warranted patience.

I just want to get back to the days were KR/PR TD's were a normal occurrence and we were even gettin multiple in one game. I can't remember the last time we had a multiple TDs on special teams returns
At Ohio St. (Travis Benjamin & Lamar Miller).

Crazy think about Lou is he was really good last year, but had taken a step back from the prior year. He kicks all season and we hear almost nothing about him. Then post season it comes out that he was dealing with a leg injury all season. Kickers kinda need two functioning legs to be at their best.

A healthy Lou this year will be winning the Ray Guy award or whatever they give the best punter. He will be a weapon.

KR and PR touchdowns are rarer than hens teeth. There were only four people who had 2 TDS, the tops, and perhaps forty people who had one return TD. For kickoffs even less.

Where did he say he had a hurt leg?

You didn’t like Richard Gordon on KO returns??

One aspect I would like to see an improvement in is kickoffs. Borregales only had a touchback on 47% on his kickoffs, which was 67th in the country. That's not good enough. It's such a weapon to have a kicker who can blast kickoff after kickoff deep into the endzone.
I couldn't find out opponents average starting position after a kickoff.... with the move to starting at the 25 and being able to fair catch the kickoff, does the touchback matter as much? If we are getting people starting their returns at the 5 or fair catching at the 15, those could be just as good and potentially better than a touchback, no?

Now if it turns out that our opponents average starting position was better than 66 other teams, than never mind all of that.

I believe a fair-catch inside the 25, which results in the ball being placed at the 25-yard line, is considered a touchback. I could be wrong, but that's how I understand it.

Also, somewhat alluding to what you're talking about, on the kicks that were returned, we ranked 127th out of 130 teams in average kickoff return allowed. 27.04 yards every time we allowed a kick return. Remember, not only did App State run a kick back for 100 yards and a TD against us, but Duke did too.

Yeah - that's not good.

Maybe if we had better coverage, kicking it short of the endzone wouldnt be terrible, but clearly we do not (or at least didnt last year).

IIRC, manolito promised him punt returns if he transferred to Miami.
