Special Teams

The biggest surprise of Mark Richt for me is how amatuer his approach is to some fundamental aspects of the game. Putting together right staff, competitive depth, red zone/ 3rd down efficiency, T.O.P., play calling (setting up plays), recruiting (getting played), overall game plans, etc.. I would think a 15 year vet of the SEC would have better ATD on such important areas.

I said that during the off-season and got downvoted to death.

You would think a guy who has been the HC for 15 years let alone 15 years in the SEC, where all phases matter, that we would have paid attention to detail in those areas. NOPE! It been more of a ****show in those areas then in Golden or Shannon's era.

CMR strongly feels that coaching stability is key, which I agree. But Hartley needs to be evaluated and at minimum someone else should take over the day to day coaching of ST come spring football.
I would love to have a super ST guru that comes up with ways to use our speed to win on every ST snap and somehow can coach the kicker and punter. The new extra coach should have been used here.

Hiring patke was all you need to see that Richt doesn’t have what it takes to win.

This staff is bad enough as is. Then NCAA gifts you an 11th coach. You grab a GA. Lol

Smh

This has kind of been beaten to death, but I'm really in disbelief about the level of play here. We're not bad on special teams, we're downright terrible. Across the board. Every. Single. Unit.

- Kicker: Baxa looks bad, his kicks are all over the place. His extra points even look ugly, barely squeeking in and then finally hitting the upright.
- Punter: Sigh.
- Kickoff coverage: Several kicks out of bounds and when teams do return it they often find yardage.
- Kickoff returns: there's never anything there, no crease or hole.
- Punt coverage: when feagles does manage to get off a decent punt, we celebrate, but have you noticed they are almost all returned? Not forcing enough fair catches.
- Punt protection: I've lost count at how many punts have almost been blocked this season. 5 or 6?
- Punt return: We fair catch everything.
- FG defense: I was stunned when they missed today. I think we all were. In general we apply no pressure and opposing fg kickers look like it's a leisurely kick in practice.

Glad you brought this up. I won't bother discussing our K or P. Everyone knows how bad they are. But I took a look at our rankings in the rest of those areas.
We're 100th in special teams efficiency.
Our punt coverage is one of the worst in the nation. Outside the top 100 coming into today. Likely still won't be top 100 after today.
Our kick coverage is equally bad. Did the math and it'll be ranked no higher than 85th after today.
Our return units are actually pretty good. ... Let me rephrase. Jeff Thomas is pretty good. We can't lose him on special teams either.

But hey 100th in special teams efficiency is better than last year's 117th.

Jokes and complaints aside.. Since he'll be on staff until the end, maybe this is what Jon should be focusing on instead of QBs. Maybe it would be his niche.

You can beat up on the OL all you want, but our ST unit is the absolute worst. And I honestly think 75% of that can be attributed to poor coaching. They look so unprepared.

I'm 46 and I remember when our STs were straight rabid animals. Those guys would literally try to decapitate and maim opposing players on kickoff and punt situations. You could count on them to put 7-10 points on the board per game. And we had guys who could take it to the house at any given time. Teams would punt away from our returners.

VT has a history of winning games with ST....we used to. With Baxa it seems the holder is inconsistent or is the ball supposed to be angled? Love Thomas as Return man, just hope he doesn;t get hurt there, he is our main offensive weapon right now.

Add recruiting to that. He doesnt put enough emphasis on OL & DT recruiting as needed. But we have a gazillion Wrs.

I can't look up what you claim. Outside pressure washing. I'm basing my assessment on Richt's tenure here. Not 1 Power 5 opponent & 2 cupcakes. I do know we were 0 for 9 on 3rd down in first half of LSU game & had way too many 3rd and longs today. We do a bad job at executing & being predictable. If you want me to look up stats and debunk your theories I can but it won't be until Monday (getting paid).

2018 Stats
Offense 3rd Down Conversions: 46%
Defensive 3rd Down Conversions: 16%
Red Zone TD efficiency: 100%, 15 out of 15

If you don't see the improvement from last year in these areas you are blind. Yes one game was against Savannah St. But last year, even against cupcakes, we sucked in the red zone and on 3rd down conversion rates - both sides of the ball. Richt has been much more creative inside the red zone. We even had a jet sweep today in the RZ that you have been clamoring for. Sorry dude, but the facts do not back up your claims.

With the athletes we are rollin out on each unit it is hard to wrap my mind around how bad we are. It’s horrific and completely unacceptable.

The ST teams are bad but Baxxa is going to cost us a game at sometime. Kickoffs going out of bounds is putting teams in pretty decent field position. His PAT's all drift to the right and as already pointed out one hit the upright.
I've been willing to withhold criticism of Richt and the staff knowing that rebuilding efforts needs time, but clearly our ST teams are lacking basic fundamentals

Lol rinse and repeat with these threads. Every week with the same ****. There's 9-11 games left, so those ready to give up should probably just stop watching..

Kicker/Punter: #98 Suleman Burrows looks like a more precise placekicker to me. Coached by NFL Pro-Bowler Neil Rackers and NFL punter Dave Brader.
