2020 3-star QB Gregory Spann has held a Miami offer since June, but as his first big offer, the Lakewood star was extremely excited and knew it would change his recruitment. Since then, Spann has been in contact with Jon Richt, who is pitching him on being a good fit for what Miami wants to do on offense.

“I was very excited and I wasn’t expecting to get an offer from them,” Spann said of the Canes. “I talk with QB coach Jon Richt. He said that he likes how I play and he believes I could fit in well with their offense.”

Spann previously claimed offers from schools like Duke and USF, but since UM pulled the trigger, has recently also earned verbal scholarships from Louisville and FAU. He says there are a few other schools that he’s in contact with regularly that could offer at any moment.

“I hear a lot from Georgia Tech, Florida, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati,” Spann said.

The Canes are off to a 4-1 start, but that hasn’t gotten by Spann: the 6’3”, 180 pounder claims to have watched every game this season and tries to envision himself behind center instead of N’Kosi Perry.

“I watch every weekend. I like what I have been seeing,” Spann said on UM. “I picture myself in the game situation when I’m watching.”

Of course, Perry recently took over the Hurricanes’ starting QB job and will be making his second start of his career against FSU on Saturday. Spann is no stranger to Perry, as the two played against each other once in high school.

“My team actually played against him my freshman year,” Spann said of Perry. “He is doing a great job so far.”

Speaking of the game against FSU, Spann will get to see Perry play live again as he is currently the only QB of note expected to be in the recruiting section for Saturday’s rivalry grudge match against the Seminoles in what will be his first-ever Canes game. In such a big-time atmosphere, Spann is looking to see if he’s comfortable in the Miami environment and how the Canes handle the pressure.

“I expect it to feel like home,” Spann said. “I also want to see how the players perform with so many fans yelling.”

In the end, why would Spann ultimately choose the Canes?

“The University of Miami would offer me a chance to attend one of the best universities in the country with great program choices, while also being able to play a sport that I really enjoy playing.”

Didn't see him go through progressions much but definitely a ton of arm and leg talent.

The Wood to The U!

Deuce goes to my alma mater and is a local star. Natural athlete and passer. Kid is a gamer, straight up. He'll need to continue developing his mechanics and going through reads but all the intangibles are there. Would love to see him in Orange and Green.

Good arm the way he is and would be our fastest QB for sure next year. Strange delivery, doesn't set his feet properly, but with time to work that out I'm guessing he would have an absolute cannon. He wouldn't be ready anytime soon, doesn't need to be, and would be a boom or bust addition down the road.

Would be a great addition in a class where we most likely take 2 QBs

Just an 11th grader. Plenty of time to learn and become a polished college-ready QB.

he has a J Cutler-like load-up and release, but he's occasionally off balance and generally doesn't get his legs involved.
