South Florida Express: Please Educate Me

Basically its a slippery slope. Not everything about it is corrupt, but there's no doubt there's shady **** that goes down.

We are in no position to play games so we have to pick and choose who we can safely go after. Not insinuating every player we have lost was dirty, just saying its a minefield for us at the moment.

This sums it up perfectly.

i agree, they definitely seem to be heading that direction, particularly in places like texas. florida will follow if they aren't already there.

"AAU" or club 7on7 FOOTBALL doesn't happen in Texas. Every high school team competes with their team under school guidance in events orchestrated by their head coaches and the governing body (UIL). The only non-team stuff kids get involved in are the combines or things like The Opening.

I'm not calling UF out on this. Although as I referenced, if I was a Bull Gator booster, I would certainly expect a healthy return on my investment. But just pointing out the very nature of these types of programs, while they may have benign roots in showcasing young athletes and expanding collegiate opportunities, just like AAU - they eventually in whole or in part, become cattlecalls and breeding grounds for the street agents and hustlers.

But hey, its all in the game.

Definitely. Look at Lyles and Seastrunk or Brian Butler with the Brown brothers. Temptation is too great and the access too easy. One of the more obvious dog-and-pony shows which the NCAA is willfully ignorant of or powerless to regulate.

wasn't aware they were done by individual school, thanks for that info. i just know 7-on-7's were and is wildly popular there and that they were putting on huge events before anyone else did so.

its weird to me that they now have the teams that are made up of players from multiple schools, when i was in school you played 7-on-7 with your hs team and traveled across the country on your own dime. we'd go to about 4 events in the summer. but now these teams have nike sponsorships and ****, that's insane.

The issues with SFE this cycle probably have more to do with Quincy Wilson than they do with Goetz. The bigger mystery is what the **** is going on with U school. I'm starting to wonder if there isn't some shadiness there the staff wants no part of. Only thing I can come up with.

There's nothing up with sfe they help the kids more than they hurt them they take them all over the country to different campuses they'd never see good for them opens up their eyes to more than just south florida they make players think about playing time which is why so many go to different places

Awesome. Please go start AAU teams in Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Tallahassee, Gainesville. I'm sure the local schools would absolutely love their local kids just "opening their eyes" to the possibilities. Totally normal that a bunch of middle-aged men devote their lives to this, nothing to see here.

if you think coaches are driving kids across state, and across state lines to experience a camp only out of the goodness of their heart, you are wrong. there is a paycheck waiting for them at each of those camp destinations (legal). they are not doing it to open eyes. they are not doing it to learn about depth charts and playing time. they are using these high profile kids as a means to get coaching checks at summer camps. if a kid learns something, great, but that doesn't change anything.

there are recruiting staffs at every school, and there are official visits available to every student athlete. there is no genuine reason for florida 7 on 7 coaches to be involved to the extent they are in recruiting.

What are you talking about?

We just got Coley and Artie Burns from SFE. IIRC Jamal Carter was on it too but i'm not sure. So that's 2/3 from the SFE in the most recent class. And the year before we got Duke, Tracy, Bush, Waters, and Malcolm. Signing day for the current class is months away so its way too early to say how many we'll get from this current SFE team.

I don't understand...are we supposed to be taking the whole **** SFE team or something?

really wish people would stop putting Stacey in the SFE alumni. Kid went to the tryouts a couple years ago just to compete nothing more. The only 7 on 7 team he played for is NE.

Just speculating, but I think it goes back to last cycle with UM slow-playing Cunningham and Moore. To top it off, we didn't offer Quincy - at least not at the position he wanted it seems. I'm sure Chad is ****ed. We will get that **** straightened out eventually.

All I know that as soon as Lane joined SFE, that is when he started his interest in UF. Prior to that it was just UM and Bama.

not that i disagree with you entirely because some of those coaches are definitely shopping kids (see genron) but aren't most of these teams sponsored? i know some of them are sponsored by under armour and nike for example. so its not like the coaches are sponsoring these teams out of pocket and racking up all these expenses which changes the equation a bit.

that said i agree, some of these coaches have their hands out, i have seen both sides of it. but there are some who genuinely try to look out for the best interest of their kids and use it to promote lesser known talents and to help them get exposure. the ****ups ruin it for those types who are trying to do good.

I am going to put on my hypocrit hat for this one.....here goes....Genron is high quality individual who only looks out for the best interests of the kids (he coaches Valentine)

We slow played Cunnigham and didnt talk to Moore during the process, untill signing day when we sent him a LOI. Idk what the **** happened with Bain, we were in a great position to land him in July/August.

People forget David Perry went to u school. I don't know if it's really a problem with the school or just a couple of bad outcomes from the outside looking in.

Give me a break about Sfe....we pulled a bunch of kids in 12 & 13 from that team. This year three kids just chose to be gators.

The big problem is the 7 on 7 team visits that they take to campuses. SFE went together to Gainesville for two straight days....it was pretty much all over after that. **** needs to stop.

We've had our fair share of SFE players that we WANTED. This thread is a result of the 3 commits UF got last night from sfl (2 of which UM either stopped recruiting or didn't even offer).

The one player UM wanted didn't want to wait to see the field and chose a school where he'd play as a freshman by default. WR is the one position we should be fine at for the next couple of years at least!

I'm not saying 7on7 isn't shady (I honestly don't know enough to have an opinion) but no one was crying when we signed Duke, Tracy (a UF lean his senior year), and Deon (an Auburn/Bama lean his senior year). This time last year, the staff wasn't even in contact with Stacy Coley and we know how that ended.

We lost one player we wanted, end of story. Enough with the conspiracy theories.

This 7x7 street agent stuff has been in play for awhile. Actually, all of the schools hate it, but nothing they can do unless NCAA gets involved. The kids who are influenced by the agent/coach are generally the kids you don't want long term. IMO this is much ado about nothing. Just part of the crap associated with recruiting high school bball and football in 2013.

i do know that the genron guy was shopping recruits, that's why he was kicked off the team by goetz.

Or maybe the Goetz guy used Genron(a well know seller) as fall guy/scapegoat... in several busisness the low level guys are sacrificed to maintain the good aura of the head honcho. And are compensated for it...

Just another way of seeing the story

if that's what you want to believe i guess. genron was involved with recruits before joining sfe and is still trying to get back in the mix with other 7-on-7 teams. bad news follows that dude.

I wouldn't hold my breath for people to be crying when we acquire numerous highly rated prospects, even if it seems shady. this is a canes site.

Even in Brazil people know about Genron... lol

But I do not put my hand in the fire for Goetz. Like I said, just another point of view...
