The term “when it rains, it pours” is coming to line down at Coral Gables regarding the offensive line. Coming after a dominating performance against Virginia Tech, the Miami Hurricanes have suffered yet another setback. This time it’s the loss of possibly their best offensive lineman, Ereck Flowers.
The Miami Herald reported that Flowers will miss at least one game this season and could possibly miss the rest of the season if the injury doesn’t heal properly. Coach James Coley later confirmed the Miami Herald report.
Losing Flowers is huge not only because of pure talent, but because of the lack of depth at the position.
Just yesterday Al Golden ruled out Kc McDermott for the rest of the season and two weeks ago, Taylor Gadbois was ruled out, too. That’s now three offensive tackles that Miami has lost. And when you put the Malcolm Bunche transfer, and the surprisingly flip to Stanford (which he already left the program there) of Reilly Gibbons, you could say Miami has lost 5 tackles in a span of 8 months. That’s nobodies fault, but it’s a lot of bodies.
With all the injuries, the mixing and matching will start for Miami. Jon Feliciano, who has been great at right tackle since the lost of Gadbois, will probably shift over all the way across the line to the left tackle spot. True freshman Trevor Darling will take over the right tackle spot and that would give the Hurricanes two true freshman starters at the offensive line. Nick Linder being the other starter.
It’s not an ideal situation but the Canes will have to go at it with what they have and make a push towards an ACC Championship game appearance this season. Flowers could very possibly be back this season maybe after the bye (being really optimistic) but it could also be a season-ending injury and the Miami Hurricanes need to be ready for what ever comes.
Flowers has started every game this season for Miami.
First things first, though, and that’s to hope for a quick recovery from big man Ereck Flowers.
