I was told that AE (after Erickson) we were having a hard time getting someone to come coach the canes, Lubbick was HC at Colorado State at the time and doing ok there, was offered the job, and turned us down.

Butch, who I was told was like the 4th guy offered, finally took the job.

Butch Davis is a football GOD!

He turned that offer into the greatest team college football has ever seen.

Actually, sonny lubbick wanted to coach back at UM, but they disrespected him, keep in mind during that time the administration was being stupid and trying to change the image at UM, so they kind of wanted nothing to do with anybody on staff. Guys like lubbick wasnt with the soft directiin UM wanted to go in, so butch came in saying all the stuff they wanted to hear and thats how he got the job, but butch didnt shy away from recruiting the same area's/Players that made MIAMI GREAT! So he was smart enuff to know that, but another reason he left cause troll shalala came in with the same "change he image mindset" it was all planned o take Miami down from being dominant, wasnt no coincidence that the double agents started coming to ruin the foottball program. So basically the whole time she was here, mediocrity reigned supreme, as soon as she's gone, in came the goon julio frenk, and its only a matter of time now. Those who know what real UM football is know that we already back, coach richt knows the blue print but has added even more and putting his own stamp on it. I can already tell under coach richt, we are going to have some of the best and most athletic o-lines consistently, that's an element that has not always been the most consistent here.

I will say this to, i've never seen this much receiver talent stacked up like this either at the same time. Only the ref's will be able to save most teams soon. Alot of the younger or new UM fans are scared of Bama's and clemson. Those teams are not that far ahead us, only in depth, other than that, our starrers vs their starters would look similar or better than what Fsu was doing to them. Keep in mind Fsu had no receivers with our talent level, and if francois doesnt get hurt, who knows, anyway, this team is legit now, stop complaining about rosier as if its a guarantee that any of the other qb's will perform better at this stage, coach richt and company know what they are doing the majority of the time.

That’s how I remember it.

Lot's of great Cane D. I've been watching all the 80's games and there really isn't much difference between the Wannstedt D's and Lubick's in production. I'll take either. Also you can't complain about the 2001-2003 D's all that much. It's actually kinda crazy watching Jimmy's Canes from the 80's and then the 2001-2002. Schemes on both D and O were nearly identical even after a decade.

Now you're speaking my language. I have brought this subject up before. Lubbick is my favorite Hurricane DC by far! It's a shame he wasted away at CSU instead of getting the recognition as a defensive mastermind that he deserved.

Wannstedt's D was really JJ-s D......
Where Lubbicks was Lubbicks....

1991 Sonny Lubick D was the best I've seen. I only remember the specifics of the bigger games on the schedule, but if you look at the entire schedule, *no one* scored meaningful points on that defense. We played a couple supposedly high-flying "West Coast" style offenses, too - I know everyone remembers the famous Klingler Houston game in the Orange Bowl, but we also played San Diego State, a team that was putting up some numbers in the WAC on offense. Both those teams combined only managed 22 points. Then of course there was Wide Right 1 against one of the better Bowden-coached FSU teams we've faced. Didn't matter, no one put up points.

I actually had a couple classes with Sonny's daughter at Gables High....I think she was only there for one year or so.

Erickson as head coach and Sonny as DC had the good sense to not mess with (other than a few tweaks) the defense that was installed by JJ and Wannstedt.

I believe Jim Tressel was also offered the job, and he turned us down as well. Was at Youngstown St at the time.
