People really are underestimating the job Bill Clark has done since arriving at UAB. From 2005-2013 (the year before Clark arrived) the highest finish UAB had in conference was tied for fourth and never had a winning season during that time. Heck he took over a team that had gone 2-10 the year before and had them at 6-6 his first year. Here is the record before Bill Clark.

They went:

2005: 5-6
2006: 3-9
2007: 2-10
2008: 4-8
2009: 5-7
2010: 4-8
2011: 3-9
2012: 3-9
2013: 2-10

Total: 31-76 (28.97%)

Since Bill Clark arrived:

2014: 6-6 (Tied for 3rd)

2015: No program

2016: No program

2017: 8-5 (Tied for 2nd and made first bowl game in over a decade)

2018: 11-3 (Won Conference and Won first bowl game in program history)

Total: 25-14 (64.10%)

The man can flat out coach and knows how to turn around a program. He even had them in the top 25 this year.

It is impressive what UAB and their staff has accomplished. That being said, it is one thing to do it in Conference USA and another to do it at a Power 5 school. For every legit up-and-comer in the Group of 5 (ex. Urban Meyer), there is a wannabe (ex. Al Golden or Gary Andersen).

You’re seeing the better coached team win. Just like we see in the P5.

The point is Golden and Andersen won too at the Group of 5 level. It doesn't always transfer to the Power 5 level.

Al Golden had 3 losing seasons out of 5 at Temple and had an overall losing record at his only HC position prior to Miami. Bill Clark has never had a losing season. He was 106-11 as a high school coach and his worse season as college coach was 6-6 (1st yr at UAB. They were 2-10 the year before).

Again, he can't show he can do it till he gets the opportunity at a P5 school. Will Miami take that risk again? Maybe, but I would be more inclined to go after a guy who did it at a Group of 5 school and then won again at a lower P5 school like Campbell at Iowa State or Babers.
