Alright, another college football weekend in the books. Some quick thoughts on what I saw in week 9 at Coach JB's Touchdown Bar and Cigar Lounge...
- USF may have choked away their playoff chances vs Memphis. They had a two touchdown lead in the second half. But their defense got gassed late and Brendan Lewis kept hitting key throws late
- While North Carolina lost again, the Tar Heels did look like an improved team vs UVA. They looked like a Belichick coached team on defense. They came within a cenimeter of upsetting the Cavs, who remain undefeated in ACC play. UNC out-gained, out-first downed and won the time of possession battle, but their three turnovers cost them. But UNC is making some progress, here.
- Huge win for Ol Miss in Norman, a huge victory for Lane Kiffin (who may or may not be the next Gators coach). Kiffin is a great play-caller but it was maddening how he kept pulling Trinidad Chambliss at certain points. Then he went for it on his own 23 yard line. In certain ways they overcame some of his own decisions. As for the Sooners, John Mateer just isn't the same guy pre-injury
- Indiana ended UCLA's fun ride in emphatic fashion. From the very first drive they dominated on both sides. Right now there is a strong case that the Hoosiers are the second best team in the country.
- For much of the game South Carolina out-played Bama. All they needed was one last defensive stop -- and they didn't get it. And they lost at home in excruciating fashion 29-22. Ty Simpson made plays when needed, but he was harrassed much of the day. I still worry about the Tide's inability to run the ball consistently
- Is anyone doing a better job of coaching than Kalani Satake at BYU. The Cougars got blitzed early in Ames, and then took over in the second half. 47 Bachmeir has been a revelation at QB for BYU who remained undefeated
- Mike Elko has been a home run hire for Texas A@M. They pulled away from LSU at Death Valley. This Marcel Reed lead Aggies offense is the most explosive unit they've ever had with fast playmakers all over. On the flipside, it seems the walls are closing in on Brian Kelly in Baton Rouge. The Tigers offense has been uneven the whole season with Nussmeier's injury, but now their defense is getting gashed.
- Haynes King should be on every Heisman ballot. This time he had 300 yards passing (3 TD), and the Jackets also ran for 239 yards. This is a tough match-up for anyone that they play given their style and ability to grind the clock, shorten the game -- and still be able to bust big plays. Gatech will most likely be undefeated going into the UGA showdown
- Anyone else notice that Cincy is 7-1. They are a late INT in the season opener vs Nebraska from being undefeated
- How did Texas beat Miss St?
- Joey Aguilar continues to put up big numbers for the Vols (20 for 26, 394 yards, 3 TDs) as Tenn scorched Kentucky, 56-34. In an year when so many SEC quarterbacks were overrated coming in, Aguilar has far exceeded expectations
- Colorado got absolutely blown away by Utah, giving up 43 points in the first half, on their way to a 53-7 defeat. By far, the worst defeat of the Coach Prime run at CU.
