Another great weekend of college football, some thoughts..
- Its amazing what was being said/thought on Labor Day Weekend (Week 1) to now. FSU had just whipped Bama. The Noles were back, and Bama was a dead dynasty. Well, look at the juxtaposition of the two teams now. Noles get upset by the 'Hoo's on Friday night. While Bama goes into Athens and once again finds a way to defeat Georgia.
It goes to show you that this is a week-to-week sport, and what might be true on a particular Saturday, isn't by the next one. It's a long season, and we still haven't seen October. Everyone is guilty of over-reacting to what takes place early in the season.
-Speaking of the Bama-UGA game, what in the world was Kirby Smart doing not kicking that short FG to tie it? Yeah, I'm not second guessing, Im FIRST guessing. UGA significantly out-gained the Tide on the ground and still lost. On the flip side, Ty Simpson has come a long way since that opening game and now should be in the Heisman discussion.
BTW, last year Bama beat UGA, and then had to play Vandy. Well, guess who the Tide plays next week? An even better Vandy team, but this time in Tuscaloosa.
Also, as a Miami fan Im glad Bama won this game. Georgia was getting a bit too close to the all-time home winning streak (58 straight) for my liking. Hey, that record is important to us Canes fans. Long live the Orange Bowl.
- A lot is made over the record of James Franklin vs Top 5 games. It is what it is. But Drew Allar once again came up short in a big game. As suspected, he was the second best QB on the field in this game.To be fair, even with all their portal additions, the Nittany Lions are still average on the outside. Where have you gone OJ McDuffie?
- In terms of those two aforementioned games. both were important and entertaining. But they dont really have the same impact -- especially for the losers -- as they once would have. The reality is you can get into the playoff if you play in the SEC or Big10 with more than one loss, and here's the kicker. There's a chance these teams might have another meeting or two down the line this same season in the conference championship game and then the playoffs. The specialness of big games is now lessened. Still, college football has the best regular season of any American sport in my opinion.
- CJ Carr is coming on and maturing fast as a quarterback. Now, he played a team in Arkansas which looks like they have packed it in on Sam Pittman. The Razorbacks defensive coordinator is Travis Williams, who if I recall correctly was the Miami linebacker coach for about 10 minutes several off-seasons ago. I read where he does freestyle raps. Well, he should do a diss track on his own unit.
I expect the Irish to rip off a lot of wins moving forward.
- Thought Gatech and Louisville were a bit fortunate to get road victories. Wake Forest really got the shaft on a late encroachment that was not called on the Yellow Jackets that would've given them the first down and sealed the game. There's something very shaky so far about the Cardinals, despite their undefeated record. Next week they host a surging UVA squad and their high powered offense.
- Just when I was beginning to trust USC and thought they had improved on defense. But credit to the Illini they bounced back after getting humiliated last week vs Indiana. Again, this is a week-to-week sport. But this is a game that Lincoln Riley has to win. Last seasons issues was not winning road games in the Big10. Illinois is a good, solid team -- but one that Trojan fans expect to win routinely.
On the bright side, Makai Lemon has to be a front runner for the Biletnekoff Award at this stage.
- There is no better defense right now than Ohio St. And Julian Sayin has been efficiently serviceable in leading their offense. That was a solid effort in his first road start in a loud and energetic atmosphere at Husky Stadium
- Auburn paid a lot of NIL money to receivers, Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton. Well, in their loss vs Texas A@M Coleman had 4 catches for 18 yards, Singleton 5 for 56.
- Lane Kiffin needs to make the call -- Trinidad Chambliss should be the Ol' Miss QB1 moving forward. As for LSU, that offense right now is broken, or maybe something is wrong with Nuss.
- Did Fran Brown make his squad run a marathon after getting blown out by Duke at home?
- UCLA might go 0-12. Northwestern represented their last best chance to win a game this season. Terry Donahue is rolling over in his grave.
- Once again Colorado and Coach Prime had some highly questionable clock management. Their last drive they once again took waaaay too much time for very little yards as they were down to BYU 24-21. I guess it didn't matter since Kaidon Salter threw a game-sealing INT. But this was bad. (And this was after I thought they should've taken a timeout at around 2:17 after BYU's 3rd down play, instead of just letting it get to the 2 minute warning.)
The worst thing you can do in these late game 2-minute/hurry-up situations is to have plays that dont get at least the first down and stay in-bounds. Sometimes you're just better off taking a timeout and saving the time and re-setting your offense.
