watched games all Satuday, some quick random thoughts..
- Right now, the top 2 teams are UGA and Texas. Both are elite on both sides of the ball, and have premiere quarterbacks. Early on, they look like playoff locks.
- In two consecutive seasons, Steve Sarkisian, has prepared teams to win on the road in Tuscaloosa and now 'the Big House' of Ann Arbor. Yeah, I realize Michigan is way down, but again, the manner in which they controlled the game from the beginning was impressive
CJ Baxter was a big loss for the 'Horns' but their RB rotation of Jaydon Blue, Tre 'Bud' Wisner and Jerrick Gibson is solid. Right now, Quinn Ewers might be all-too-early Heisman favorite
As for Michigan, this QB issue isn't going away this season. They have a problem
- Marcus Freeman has had some success at Notre Dame, but he now has losses vs Marshall and No. Illinois at home. And the officiating late in that game was baffling. Riley Leonard is a rugged, athletic QB, but he's not a natural passer -- and I'll ask this again, who is he throwing to outside? How much will this effect ND's playoff chances should they be a one-loss team?
- Cal with a big win on the road vs Auburn on 'the Plains'. While Auburn has some talented young WR's, I still dont see Peyton Thorne as a real good fit for that Huge Freeze offense. The Golden Bears played hard, and they were the better team on this day. Fernando Mendoza is a solid college signal caller.
- Kyle McCord played a great game in leading the Cuse to a huge victory over GaTech in a pivotal ACC clash at the Dome. It wasn't just the numbers for McCord, I have never seen him be so decisive and confident in pulling the trigger, more so than at anytime at Ohio St last season. Fran Brown has the Orange going good early. He looks like a serious football coach, Brown is a real rising star in the coaching ranks
- Oregon is good, but early on-- and things can certainly change -- they were a bit overrated. Again, how you win says a lot, and thus far, two close victories at Autzen against teams you were expected to handle easily. There's just something missing from this Ducks squad early on. Two special teams TD's in a three point victory last night.
- Nebraska and Matt Rhule are ahead of schedule. and they controlled Colorado in their grudge match. They still need to recruit some more speed outside for Dylan Raiola, but you could see how rock solid they are upfront(especially defensively). They could be undefeated going into their match-up with Ohio State on October 26.
As for Colorado, I thought they bowed up defensively a bit in the second half, but many of the same problems exist as last year. The Oline is still very much a work-in-progress, and Shaduer Sanders is getting hit a lot. Now they go on the road to play a team in Colorado St that will treat that game like World War III.
The reality is that the Prime-lead Buffs are a target for everyone and anyone they play -- and aren't good enough to handle that on a week-to-week basis the way the elite programs are.
- It turns out Matt Campbell can still coach 'ball
- Despite the Boise St loss, Ashton Jeanty is a guy to keep an eye on. He's the best running back in the land
- Signs of life for Cade Klubnik who had a huge game vs App St. Perhaps it's something to build off of. But I'll say this again, the Tigers still have an elite defense, they just need a functional offense, and they can make a run for the ACC. But you have to let Klubnik stretch his arm out a bit on early downs.
- As for Miami, they got a sparring session vs FAMU. The secondary had some leaks. The Rattlers QB, Daniel Richardson, was impressive in extending plays and putting the ball on his guys. But the Canes got some young players their first snaps, and stayed healthy. Not much more needs to be said about this game. Now they face David Letterman U at Hard Rock next Saturday
Looking ahead, all of a sudden the games on the road vs Cal and Syracuse look MUCH more interesting than they did just a couple of weeks ago.
