So week 13 is in the books, can you believe we only have one more weekend of regular season college football? This season has seemingly gone by in a blur. For me, it will always be the best time of the year. Some thoughts on what I saw..
- Friday night, Florida State found new ways to lose, as they had consecutive botched punt returns to lose to the Wolfpack at Carter-Finley, 21-11 in what was quite frankly a tough game to watch. ACC Action... it's not fantastic. FSU according to Andrea Adelson is bringing back Mike Norvell. Pretty sure Nole fans hate that.
- In Autzen Stadium, USC tried their best to hang in there vs Oregon but simply couldn't come up with enough defensive stops against a balanced defensive attack led by Dante Moore. Moore has a ton of talent but you get the sense he need to return another season. Im a big believer in guys have at least 30 starts under their belt before going to the next level. The Ducks did this without three of their top WR's.
- Utah survived versus a .500 K-State team. Will they be dinged by the playoff committee for struggling against a team that has been disappointing this season. Joe Jackson of K-State had one of the great games of the season, he had 24 carries for 293 yards and three TD's. The Wildcats have lost a bunch of one-possession games this season
- Not much in terms of SEC play, as they played a bunch of soft non-conference games as teams got ready for rivalry weekend. Vandy kinda did the same thing as they beat up on Kentucky.
- BYU wore down Cincy on the road. LJ Martin is one of the better running backs in the country and he carried the Cougars on this night with physical runs. The Bearcats kicking game was a disaster, as they missed a few FG's
- Don't look now but Arch Manning is coming on. Not only did he throw for 389 yards, but he threw some TD's, caught one and ran one in. This version of Manning is not the same guy we saw through mid-October. He looks much mokre comfortable and decisive in the pocket. The 'Horns' play Texas A@M next week in Austin.
- GaTech had been showing signs for weeks of being very vulnerable, and Haynes King can only do so much. Pitt came into Bobby Dodd Stadium and put up 28 quick points and the Jackets were being the 8-ball all night. Pitt was without Desmond Reid, but 'Boosie' Turner rushed for 201 including the game sealing 56 yard jaunt. Panthers stay alive in the ACC race with a 42-28 win. I guess Pat Narduzzi really didn't care too much about the Notre Dame game. Mason Heintschel has some 'Johnny Football' in him
As for King, disappointing last home game for him. But he will leave Gatech as one of their all-time great QB's alongside the likes of Joe Hamilton. He's been a program defining player and he should still be invited to the Heisman ceremony in December.
- One of the more remarkable things you'll see all season was that Notre Dame was up on the Cuse 21-0 -- before their offense even took the field. It was part of a 70-7 destrution of the Orange. This has been a humbling campaign for 'Fiery' Fran Brown (if he can even be humbled, that is). Their season went down with Steve Angeli's achilles
- Gotta give Kenny D at Arizona St. credit. They lose Sam Leavitt(who is the subject of a lot of transfer rumors) and he has made it work with Jeff Sims, who flat out looked unplayable a couple of seasons ago at Nebraska. But he has adjusted his offense and behind 'Runnin' Raleed Brown (former Mater Dei grad and USC Trojan) who rushed for 255 yards on just 22 totes. The Sun Devils are now 8-3. As for Colorado, the Coach Prime buzz seem to be gone.
- Finally, a lot of talk of which QB's will hit the transfer portal. Hey, it's part of the game now for better or worse, there is no stopping it. A name that I like is Drew Mestemaker,'the Touchdown Maker' (BTW, this was originally a moniker given to Stephen Baker from Fresno St waaaay back when), he put up 469 yards and just 23 pass attempts vs Rice. This guy is a gunslinger type, who has a natural feel for the game. His release is a tad low but he's an accurate passer (70.1) and a good athlete who can use his legs a bit.
The Mean Green steamed Rice, 56-24, to improve to 10-1.
