- UNC Is bad. I mean, REAL bad. There's no other way to put it. The Bill Belichick experiment has been an absolute disaster. It actually leaves you wondering if the Carolina administration cuts bait on this after this season. The Tar Heels aren't good at any phase of the game. What's disheartening is that they actually looked worse vs Clemson (who still has a good deal of future NFL talent on it's roster, to be fair) than they did on opening night vs TCU.
At times, they don't even look like they're coached.
It was 35-3 at the half, but really this ballgame was over after the first two Clemson offensive drives where they went up 14-0. Dabo Swinney actually called off the dogs early in this one. UNC brought in over 35 new players this season. Well, it looks like they need to bring in another 35 to replace those guys. They just have no talent, and Dre Bly, Julius Peppers, Robert Quinn and Quin Sturdevant aren't walking through that door.
The best thing about Tar Heel football games this season is that if you stay till the end the concesssion lines are short and there isn't much traffic to contend with getting out of there. As for Belichick, Im sure he's just looking forward to Cal.
- Cincy keeps rolling after their season opening loss to Nebraksa. They handed Iowa St their first loss. Brendan Sorsby is a quarterback that is overlooked. They were thisclose to defeating Nebraska in the season opener and haven't loss since. They are now a legitimate Big12 contender. Evan Pryor and Tawee Walker are a strong backfield duo for the Bearcats
- I'll admit, I thought UCLA might go winless. Well, they shocked the world by defeating top 10 ranked Penn st at the Rose Bowl. For one day, there is joy in Westwood.
If there wasn't heat on James Franklin before, there is now. It's one thing to lose close games to top 5 teams but to lose to a squad that hadn't led for one second this season is something completely different. Penn St podcasters are calling this the worst loss in the Franklin PSU era. I can't disagree. They just lost to a team that came in winless and hadnt led for one second coming into this weekend
UCLA held the ball for over 39 minutes and racked up 435 total yards. How much did the Nittany Lions pay Jim Knowles to come in and run this unit?
- Bama subdued a scrappy Vandy team in T-town. But I came away still thinking Vandy is a tough out for anyone in the SEC. The normally reliable Diego Pavia had two key turnovers in the redzone that crippled the 'Dores shot at an upset. What's interesting is that this time around it was Bama who controlled the ball for just over 37 minutes. Ty Simpson just keeps playing good ball for the tide
-Speaking of Penn St, them, Clemson and Texas all came into this season as top 5 teams, IIRC. They all have at least 2 losses now after the first Saturday or October. As for Texas, Arch Manning had an up-and-down day. But for every good throw, there are just as many that are inaccurate, or times he holds the ball too long. To be fair, the Texas Oline got whipped by a tough Gators front. The retooled UT line (which lost the likes of Kelvin Banks) has struggled this season.
But still, Arch had a better weekend than Mark Sanchez. That man butt-fumbled a lucrative job while on assignment in Indianapolis.
DJ Lagway had a strong bounce back game (he still has to clean up his mechanics a bit) and Dallas Wilson gave the Gators offense a real jolt of energy. Jaden Baugh set the tone early for UF offensively with some strong, physical running. He's one of the more underrated backs in the country.
- Right now, the high priced Texas Tech squad is the class of the Big12. They just systematically took apart an unbeaten and improved Houston squad at their place 35-11. Behren Morton silenced any talk of a QB controversy with a strong effort (28 for 40, 345 1 TD)
- Right now, it looks like Ohio St, Miami and Oregon who are the class of college football. You can put them in any order, I don't care. We're still a few weeks from Halloween, so it's still relatively early in this season. A lot can still happen. But that trio has stood out to me.
