Some early morning Miami-L'Ville thoughts...

Have we tried a go route to Keelan Marion? I think he's pretty fast. The problem is not really at WR its with Beck, who apparently has a weak *** arm and throwing rainbows
I was thinking to same thing last night. Marion isn’t good at getting separation on intermediate routes, but his speed should allow him to get open on fly/go routes.
I would have liked to see us stretch the field with him on some deep sideline routes, then Beck just needs to not underthrow the ball and it’s either caught or out of bounds.

And we know he can catch. He's made some very difficult hands catches in traffic this year.

Yes, Beck under threw him, I believe that was int #2…

But to your point, he’s underutilized and we keep complaining about talent but simply don’t maximize what we have…

Go routes, jet sweeps, seam routes, reverses and on and on…

Head scratching man…

Got back late last night from Hard Rock Stadium. Was it all a dream (a bad one, at that?). No, unfortunately it was reality - and Louisville -- that slapped Miami in the face. A few thoughts on the game..

- From the very beginning, Brohm had a really good plan. No surprise given his offensive acumen. He is one of the best offensive minds in the game. Quick throws, short crossing rounds never allowed the Miami defense to get settled in the first two drives and just like that it was 14-0.

It was clear that Miller Moss was going to get the ball out his hands quickly as possible, you wonder if Heatherman had it to do over again he'd have his corners play a bit more press and disrupt those routes earlier

- Carson Van Beck, four INT's, really should've been 5 without the bail out call. Bottom line, he has reverted to the 2024 version, where Miami needed the 2023 guy that protected the ball well. He is now creeping up to 10 interceptions( had 12 last season) That last throw was the kind that can kill a teams spirit. It reminded me a lot of Kyle Wrights late INT vs Gatech in 2005

- Offensively, Im concerned. This unit has flashed a bit, but it now seems to actually have regressed. Two things stand out to this layman. Shannon Dawson dials up a lot of runs out of tight, bunched up formations versus stacked boxes. You could clearly see it from the endzone view I had. Then this WR unit, while solid, has no real vertical threat to scare teams over the top. It could really use a guy like Phil Dorsett or Travis Benjamin

First 12 carries for the Canes netted 26 yards. Its hard to stick with the run game when you cant establish it from the beginning or fall behind two touchdowns

- Last nights play calling was really frustrating the fans, early runs that were getting stuffed, and it seemed like too many horizontal throws were Miami WR's weren't winning their battles blocking on the perimeter vs Cardinal defenders, thus limiting those plays effectiveness. I'd say that Dawson needs to open it up more on early downs, but then,...do you trust Beck at this point?

- A bright spot again was Malachi Toney. Not much more needs to be said about him. But what has happened to Josh Moore in recent weeks?

- Last night was the first time that Ruben Bain didn't really have a great impact. It was bound to happen, I believe more and more teams will go to the quick game vs Miami moving forward. Heatherman has to adjust to that.

- Take away Isaac Brown's fumble and this game isn't close down the stretch. Give L'Ville credit they did out-play Miami throughout. As it became 24-13, fans started streaming towards the exits. It was dead inside 'the Asylum', but after that fumble the crowd was electric -- yes, I stayed throughout, where else was I going to go? -- and it felt like Miami was going to pull a miracle, but honestly, Louisville deserved to win that game.

- Unfortunately, for Mario Cristobal this is another season where he loses a game that his team is heavily favored. It's not just a trend, it is what it is. In 2024 they lost as double digit favorites on the road vs Gatech and Syracuse. Now they did the same at home to the Cardinals, who gave Miami their last home loss back in 23. The mark of an elite program is to routinely win every game you're expected to. The Canes are far from being there, unfortuantely

- Looking ahead, still a lot of football to played. I'll admit, Im concerned about Beck and this offense, and if this team as a whole can rally back. One thing to monitor, as you see the likes of GaTech and UVA (who are both 3-0) do not play each other in league play. Yeah, take that for what you will but last nights defeat was a bad one. There's no two ways about it

Anyways, the sun did come up today, believe it or not. I'm going to try my best and enjoy a full day of college football.
I don't think the offense has regressed, we just are who we are. Outside of Mali, our skill players are average, and the playcalling is vanilla

Most ACC coaches are intelligent. They had 4 games worth of film coming.into ACC play to figure out our strengths, weaknesses and tendencies.

I actually thought fsu had a decent gameplan against us, they just didn't have the athletes to execute. Louisville did.

Louisville was/is the best coached team on our schedule. Brohm knows what he’s doing and without Louisville giving up 2 defensive TDs to UVA they’re a team in the playoff hunt. (They probably still are if they finish 11-1 they’re in. which is very possible for them)

I anticipated we’d lose a head scratcher to an ACC team and this was it, although Louisville is a **** good team. This loss will either Reignite a spark in our players now that they’ve been fed Kool-Aid for the last 7 weeks or this team will fold and we go 9-3/8-4, as of now I think we have too many leaders on this team to allow us to fold off a singular loss like this.

We’ve seen this teams peak. We can play with the best and I stand on that still. But, It’s HARD for any team to go undefeated. Not that any loss is a good loss but losing to Louisville & Jeff Brohm is WAY more preferable over losing to ANYONE else on our schedule. (Yes the preferred outcome is 12-0 but we knew Mario would fold at least one game, it’s just who he is.) I won’t be surprised to see them go 11-1.

I also think that the running game struggling the way it did had no choice but to open the eyes of Dawson/Mirabal & Cristobal about our scheme. The ND & UF games convinced us we would just power through any DL. But last night showed the blueprint to get us off track and I EXPECT adjustments to be made.

Also ACC was playing chess not checkers with the officiating Tonight, the hopes of 4 ACC teams in the playoffs stay alive lol
- 12-1 GT (Loses Title game)
- 12-1 UVA (Wins title game)
- 11-1 Louisville
- 11-1 Miami

It is a blessing we have Stanford this week. Although I hope they beat FSU they are BAD. Say what you will about our offensive performance but Louisville had/has one of the best DLs & defenses in the country. Im not sure there is an offense that will move the ball on them without a lot of trouble. But Stanford doesn’t. They stink. We NEED to get in tune offensively. If we don’t get right offensively this game then my expectations for the rest of the season will lower dramatically.

I don’t think the ol is a one trick pony, it’s more the playing calling is predictable. Why don’t we have half back screens or tunnel screens. I mean we have one of the largest and mobile lines in the acc and we only use them straight ahead helmet to helmet?
I think there can be a real conversation as to who is in charge of the run game (methinks its Mirabel). If I’m Mirabel and I knew my OL was not one dimensional, I would be banging my hand down on the table weekly for plays that would showcase how dominant my OL was really was. Pulling guards on toss sweeps, seal blocks, counter, trap blocking assignments.

In many air raid systems, zone blockkng run schemes are preferred. We rarely see that.

So to me, I’m not as focused on Dawson as I am on Mirabel.

Defense did their part in 2/3 quarters. Offense every single yard looked like it was agony for them to gain. So frustrating.
This point about the offense is very significant. That is Mario's personality. His messaging to the team is always some hokey bs about tough muddy bloody yards so it stands to reason that the offense would take on his personality. Everything we do especially in the run game seems like we are fighting uphill. Everything is pulling teeth and Mario for all his good traits is just too blind to see that he is doing this program harm with his struggle uphill risk averse offensive philosophy. His philosophy is literally strangling this offense with his ridiculous run up the middle into loaded boxes running game. I'm going to start calling him the Columbus Strangler.

I legit think Dawson got used to Damien breaking so many tackles. Fletcher just doesn’t do that even though I like his running style. I think we see a lot more Marty moving forward as he’s the only one who doesn’t go down immediately.

I don’t even know what the answer is right now for the passing game other than I worry Dawson is going to just screen everyone to death with Malachi and get him killed every series.

Agree, but doesn’t mean we were unprepared. I’d argue our opponents in all our previous games were less prepared than us.
That could be true. But maybe we went against teams who coaching staff are more lame duck then ours. I don't like our offense at all. It isn't diverse it is actually the opposite of diverse. Look at Louisville offense. They use misdirection they have multiple formations they run. Why can't we do the same. I mean was our offense last year more a product of cam ward improv than actual playcalling?

Wild to me how the DC didn’t carry a day 1 install bracket for one of the best wrs in the country, but I think he will be fine.

The offense needs a revamp…more natural spacing by formation and more run game variety. Mirabel/Mario don’t have to abandon their duo fetish, but **** can we get some wide zone/pin&pull smh. Such a disappointing outing.
I love duo! Me my OC and our O-line coach love it. We abandoned that **** quick cause our players couldn’t run it right. We went to blast, power, counter, and speed option because that’s what we can run

Wait until you see what lashlee is cooking up for us

You about covered it @k9cane...

Each point you made could be said (to a certain degree) about the ND, UF, and FSPooo games. Weak scheme and play calling and a conservative approach to each game...playing not to lose rather than playing to win...

People keep talking about our lack of talent but I believe it's the lack of scheme and creativity that simply doesn't maximize the talent in the cupboard to the fullest capacity...

UL doesn't have more talent than us, @DMoney has made that clear on each podcast/Youtube show but what they do have are coaches that take your Bill Walsh "coaching to score points" philosophy to heart.

UL used their by-week to create offensive and defensive schemes to beat us; we used the by-week to perfect techniques for our run game blocking...which didn't work...

Heatherman to a certain degree didn't use the by-week to outscheme UL either but the defense to their credit still gave us a chance to tie/win even though UL carved them up like a fryed turkey all game...
Louisville doesn’t have more talent, but definitely have athletes at the skill positions. Two WRs equal to ours or better. Quality RB & athletes all over the back seven. Intensity level on the road was impressive.

I hear ya but UL doesn’t have more talent than us…

And the point was and is we got out schemed/coached…

No zip on the ball, Steve, after 15 yards downfield. Very concerning.

Very Chad Pennington esque, but Carson doesn’t have the vision and anticipation to throw to the spot before the defense reacts and thus they are catching up to the receivers and making the plays.

First confirmed sign of it for me was the Cormani McClain INT in the Florida game.
He under threw the deep ball to
Josh Moore on his long TD. Yet threw multiple deep accurate passes vs FSU.
