Some early morning Miami-L'Ville thoughts...

Isaac Brown fumbles the ball, Miami gets back into the game, and Jeff Brohm sits his ******* *** down for the rest of the game.

We have 9 penalties that kill numerous drives. We have a quarterback throw pick after pick and they are still out there every play.

There are levels to coaching and there is a reason why Jeff Brohm has more wins than anyone in the ACC since he got there. Mario has real problems with coaches that are just straight up better and prepare their teams better. He has issues with the dude at GaTech. Had issues with Whittingham. Lost to Chris Petersen, Matt Campbell and Greg Schiano in a bowl games.

Reason we lost:

1. Run Scheme

2. Conservative ***** gameplan+play calling

A massive Gap

3. Oline played like **** - penalties, pass blocking, and run blocking all bad.

4. Defensive tackling - ESPECIALLY by the LBs was horrendous

27. Beck getting too greedy on the first 2 INTs.

Did Louisville change up what they were doing on defense or did we just expect to be able to manhandle their DL?

I know their offense changes a lot and those first two drives had us off guard but thought heatherman settled the defense down enough to win the game. The offense was just **** bent on the inside zone and Beck was making ooor reads and forcing throws. Feel like Dawson went with more screens because he was losing g some faith in Beck throwing it down field.

I'm all for sitting any OL who gets a movement penalty. It's enough already. Bell is a repeated offender. At least one every game.
Sit him for awhile.

Did you see him chew the QB’s *** out on that non-interception that bounced off the ground? I mean I’ve never seen a U coach (except for JJ) become so hot collared. Those kids know there are consequences to dumb plays.

Got back late last night from Hard Rock Stadium. Was it all a dream (a bad one, at that?). No, unfortunately it was reality - and Louisville -- that slapped Miami in the face. A few thoughts on the game..

- From the very beginning, Brohm had a really good plan. No surprise given his offensive acumen. He is one of the best offensive minds in the game. Quick throws, short crossing rounds never allowed the Miami defense to get settled in the first two drives and just like that it was 14-0.

It was clear that Miller Moss was going to get the ball out his hands quickly as possible, you wonder if Heatherman had it to do over again he'd have his corners play a bit more press and disrupt those routes earlier

- Carson Van Beck, four INT's, really should've been 5 without the bail out call. Bottom line, he has reverted to the 2024 version, where Miami needed the 2023 guy that protected the ball well. He is now creeping up to 10 interceptions( had 12 last season) That last throw was the kind that can kill a teams spirit. It reminded me a lot of Kyle Wrights late INT vs Gatech in 2005

- Offensively, Im concerned. This unit has flashed a bit, but it now seems to actually have regressed. Two things stand out to this layman. Shannon Dawson dials up a lot of runs out of tight, bunched up formations versus stacked boxes. You could clearly see it from the endzone view I had. Then this WR unit, while solid, has no real vertical threat to scare teams over the top. It could really use a guy like Phil Dorsett or Travis Benjamin

First 12 carries for the Canes netted 26 yards. Its hard to stick with the run game when you cant establish it from the beginning or fall behind two touchdowns

- Last nights play calling was really frustrating the fans, early runs that were getting stuffed, and it seemed like too many horizontal throws were Miami WR's weren't winning their battles blocking on the perimeter vs Cardinal defenders, thus limiting those plays effectiveness. I'd say that Dawson needs to open it up more on early downs, but then,...do you trust Beck at this point?

- A bright spot again was Malachi Toney. Not much more needs to be said about him. But what has happened to Josh Moore in recent weeks?

- Last night was the first time that Ruben Bain didn't really have a great impact. It was bound to happen, I believe more and more teams will go to the quick game vs Miami moving forward. Heatherman has to adjust to that.

- Take away Isaac Brown's fumble and this game isn't close down the stretch. Give L'Ville credit they did out-play Miami throughout. As it became 24-13, fans started streaming towards the exits. It was dead inside 'the Asylum', but after that fumble the crowd was electric -- yes, I stayed throughout, where else was I going to go? -- and it felt like Miami was going to pull a miracle, but honestly, Louisville deserved to win that game.

- Unfortunately, for Mario Cristobal this is another season where he loses a game that his team is heavily favored. It's not just a trend, it is what it is. In 2024 they lost as double digit favorites on the road vs Gatech and Syracuse. Now they did the same at home to the Cardinals, who gave Miami their last home loss back in 23. The mark of an elite program is to routinely win every game you're expected to. The Canes are far from being there, unfortuantely

- Looking ahead, still a lot of football to played. I'll admit, Im concerned about Beck and this offense, and if this team as a whole can rally back. One thing to monitor, as you see the likes of GaTech and UVA (who are both 3-0) do not play each other in league play. Yeah, take that for what you will but last nights defeat was a bad one. There's no two ways about it

Anyways, the sun did come up today, believe it or not. I'm going to try my best and enjoy a full day of college football.

I agree, another thing to note. Ray Ray Joseph, Jojo Trader, Chance Robinson, Ny Carr and Joshua Moore. All four star wideouts we've recruited and we cant get one of them to develope into a atleast a slightly above average number 3 wideout for us. I dont know if its development or just bad luck but its annoying.

Our offense has been dysfunctional all year. Sure, we won 5 game, but we also had issues putting teams away offensively, when we had them beat physically.

At this point. It seems to me the problem is too many chefs in the kitchen. If it’s true that Mirabal has control of the running game calls and the RB Coach is deciding which backs are in the game, then how can Dawson run a cohesive offense?

I think this was masked last year because Cam was given a lot of latitude to change plays.

Having Lyle out there the last two games in situational football that demanded bruisers like Brown and Fletcher, I.E., 3rd/4th and short or inside the red zone, and then calling for him to run right up the centers ***, is a recipe for disaster.

Dawson’s strength is the passing game and yet he becomes very predictable late in games. The Jet sweep and HB pass were good calls, but probably reflective of the fact that Dawson didn’t trust Beck at that moment.

If this team wants to make a deep playoff run ever, we can’t do it just by just having more talent. Mirabal needs to focus on his line. Obviously him splitting his focus on calling running plays, is taking away his time, where he should be teaching discipline to his OL. How many penalties have we had on the OLine this year?

As well, Dawson needs to be the one calling the package with the RB’s he needs for that moments play calling.

This is not to make excuses for Dawson, but if we’re going to hold his feet to the fire, then he should have the control.

Beck is damaged goods. I wanted to believe his inaccuracy was due to rain, but now we’ve seen him throw the same balls in two games where rain wasn’t a factor.

I think he hurt his arm or shoulder in that QB run to the left pylon in the USF game. He seems very timid now with his throws and when he runs.
We knew from the start of the season that we lived or died with Beck. I don’t see any solution here, other than Dawson having full control of the offense and taking that into account.

We are going to have to find a QB that has the football IQ of a Dorsey, Walsh, Ward or Kosar in the future to override Mario’s Offensive Coordinator by committee.
Beck was timid against FSU?

Few thoughts - most fairly obvious:
- Coaching staff, particularly coordinators, got schooled by Louisville. Both had the extra week to prepare, but Louisville had a helluva game plan & were the more physical team. They got in our face & Canes failed to match intensity.
- The outcome isn’t all on Beck & offense. Louisville jumped us 14-0 & we played catch up the whole night. Couldn’t get a stop on Louisville’s last scoring drive, which proved huge.
- Louisville stud WR abused us, particularly Frédérique. Too physical, couldn’t get him on ground & able to run away from DBs.
- Least physical the D has been this season. We’d get Louisville in long yardage situations & they’d break a long run or get yards off a short pass. Thankful for our safeties & nickle - only exceptions last night.
- Do support staff or analyst regularly self-scout us? If not, they better. Last two opponents exposed flaws in the offense.
- Pop Warner coach could figure out our offense. Tight or bunch formation & run it inside the tackles. Passing situation it’s either Toney or CJ.
- Lack of potential targets in the pass game is alarming. CJ & Toney or studs, but that’s basically it. Third WR is an afterthought & TEs don’t factor. Last year we spread the ball around to 3 quality receivers and a stud TE who put the fear of God is defenses. Where are all the weapons we recruited? Development?
- Great having Lyle back, but he’s not the guy running in bunched or tight line splits. If that’s how we’re gonna play, then don’t go away from physical backs in 4 & 6. Seemed like trying to force Lyle last night.
- Beck obviously can’t keep plays alive like Ward, nor even scramble 6-7 yards for a first down. Last night, our vaunted OL didn’t help generate a run game & struggled in pass protection. Game’s best DE played for Louisville. If can’t protect Beck, we got a problem.
- Rest of ACC schedule won’t be the cakewalk envisioned before last night. Played enough games that teams are figuring us out. SMU, Pitt and maybe even at VT just got tougher.

Beck was timid against FSU?
Yes, in the 2nd half, though a large part of that was getting out of rhythm with the overly conservative play calling, after we took a nice lead in the 3rd Qtr.

FSU was the most comfortable I’ve seen him in a game, but he’s been wildly inconsistent at times, aiming the ball, getting out of rhythm when we go conservative and making poor decisions when he’s pressured.

This is who he is and who he’s always been. Gonna live or die with it the rest of the way.

I’m hoping like Alabama vs FSU we came in thinking we can show up and win. I hope this was a wake up call. We will find out in coming weeks. Our OL and DLine were not dominant. Hopefully both step up after this wake up call or we are looking at 2016 or last year finish to the season. Next week is a good week to get our confidence back.

This game was like Georgia tech last year. Couldn’t get out of our own way. Lack of preparation. A good OC post scheming us. Defense not it and offense not it. Had a chance at the end and squandered it.

Syracuse was just one side being so horrible. This game was very similar to Georgia tech

You about covered it @k9cane...

Each point you made could be said (to a certain degree) about the ND, UF, and FSPooo games. Weak scheme and play calling and a conservative approach to each game...playing not to lose rather than playing to win...

People keep talking about our lack of talent but I believe it's the lack of scheme and creativity that simply doesn't maximize the talent in the cupboard to the fullest capacity...

UL doesn't have more talent than us, @DMoney has made that clear on each podcast/Youtube show but what they do have are coaches that take your Bill Walsh "coaching to score points" philosophy to heart.

UL used their by-week to create offensive and defensive schemes to beat us; we used the by-week to perfect techniques for our run game blocking...which didn't work...

Heatherman to a certain degree didn't use the by-week to outscheme UL either but the defense to their credit still gave us a chance to tie/win even though UL carved them up like a fryed turkey all game...

Same garbage they ran last year, not sure how we were so surprised. A few wrinkles, I'm sure, but overall we just got our *** beat, bottom line.

My observations so far this season

1. Seems like our o-line is a one trick pony (tight formation and helmet on helmet and hope we move them back). This is the BY FAR the biggest opportunity for our offense to open up. We rarely pull OL or give a little spacing between the OL. And our go to when we need a yard is bring in another OL? Mirabel is too involved in the offense imo and I am questioning the development of the OL.

2. On defense, that’s two weeks in a row where the offense comes out and shreds first couple drives. Seems like we take for granted we are going to get to the qb regardless of where we line up. The blueprint is out. Quick hitters and if our defense line up out wide, run it through those gaps. We further help opposing offense by playing bail technique. If you want to dictate on defense you HAVE to take away something.

Also, they have one primary wr. How do we not have a LB spy that crossing route by Bell post snap before dropping back?

3. Beck’s post snap reads need improving by and fast, but not sure if that happens. He has no confidence in anyone other than Mali and CJ. Throwing to them in triple coverage is sign of lack of confidence in play call, other WRs and himself.

4. So in summary, the biggest areas for improvement rests with

1. Mario - allowing Mirabel too much influence on run game. Pride goes before the fall.

Building Becks confidence with more spacing out wide receivers and have Mali work more underneath. Stop being predictable on flat routes for Lofton.
I don’t think the ol is a one trick pony, it’s more the playing calling is predictable. Why don’t we have half back screens or tunnel screens. I mean we have one of the largest and mobile lines in the acc and we only use them straight ahead helmet to helmet?

Have we tried a go route to Keelan Marion? I think he's pretty fast. The problem is not really at WR its with Beck, who apparently has a weak *** arm and throwing rainbows
