Let’s Reason. Richt said the main reason that he came here was because he wanted to call plays again. With that said, replacing the OC as play-caller will not happen.
The Solution: Is to empower another coach if they are not already doing so (Richt Jr or Brown) even another member of the staff with the ability to see the field from the press box. From this vantage point they can assist Richt in the following ways:
• Breakdown film, run the scout defense at practice (since they know the most about our upcoming opponent's defense), and the OC and them develop each week's game plan.
• On game day, they sit in the box and have a headset link to the OC. They give him data about down, distance, field position, any defensive personnel changes, and what their defensive tendencies show.
• They will often suggest a play or two. As we run the play, they will identify the LB and DB reaction to motion, coverage schemes defenses used, and whether our receivers ran their routes correctly or blocked properly.
• They relay this info as the refs are untangling the pile and getting the ball set again. Oh, and They log every offensive play and result so that they can provide a tendency report at halftime so we can make adjustments.
He just picks a play. Ceremonial, indeed. Like we use the "Get Back Coach".
