Solution for Golden

Who's gonna pay that 10mil buyout ? Any takers ? we all need to play the lotto from here on out. The only way

There is no way he has a 100% guaranteed contract. His buy out is probably half that, or less than UF paid to oust Muschamp.

Based on previous UM coaching contracts, my guess is that golden's buyout for after the 2014 season is around $5 million. My guess is that it goes to the $2 million range after 2015, which is why I think he's here for one more year.

The flaw in the OP's idea is that Donna is not going to incur a $5 million buyout that would have to be paid by her successor. That's a bush league move.

I find it hard to believe that the damage keeping him would do the next 5 years of the programs bottom line isn't worth $3M extra dollars.

People do not seem to understand that the ACC is a purely socialized athletic conference. ALL bowl monies, All TV monies, All monies incurred by athletics is pooled together and divided up at the end of each school year. As long as the ACC can garner a good contract with ABC Sports, the financial hit to UM is lessened.

A new president will take over in May. I don't see any changes until then but neither Golden or Blake James are safe they way things are going.

I wasn't even factoring those revenues into consideration in my post. It is still pretty bad for UM financially (certainly to the tune of $3M/yr in NPV) to not maximize their football program. A successful program certainly does provide significant revenue directly, but as you said the lions share is hedged through the conference. However, the ancillary benefits of having a top 15 football program are great and should be factored in as well. Contributions from alumni to the university as well as applications from freshman both go up when the team is good, and the nation wide brand exposure (particularly if paired with a cutting edge medical institution) could be worth WAY WAY more than a fairly insignificant outlay if done correctly.

I'm not a calculus teacher, but walk through the math with me.

He's got a $5 million buyout, with 5 years remaining on his contract. That's $1 per year.

Next year, it goes down to $3 million, with 4 years remaining on his contract. That's $750k per year.... only a $250k difference.

You're telling me keeping a bad coach around for a lousy $250k per year seems like a good business decision to our administration?

God I hope they're not that dumb.
