SoFla recruiting old-heads, what happened here?

Some guys develop late, at that time he might have been a lower tier player, but developed physically and blew up, also some guys don't start playing football until later

Why was he rated so low at Norland, and why was he not recruited more highly? Grades?

Grades. He was a QB at Norland.
Almost went to FSU(thankfully he didn't) but ended up going to JUCO instead. Then signed with FIU but got kicked out for fighting. Butch Jones recruited him to WVU so Brown followed Jones to Central Michigan instead.

Edit for a bit more info

He supposedly played multiple sports and multiple positions in football, and was good at Norland. Maybe not great, but it just seems strange that he had zero stars and no major offers.

There is a story that he "applied to" F$U and didn't get in for academic reasons. Then he was at FIU and got kicked out.

He played at a time where some of the bad, or not so good football teams would put their best athlete at QB. Norland sucked but he was a highlight reel when he played.

He had bad grades because his was kicked out when he was living with his mother in Miami, his pops Eddie Brown was still playing Arena league ball somewhere & Antonio was basically living with friends & family around the hood. He was actually coached by TY Hilton's dad in little league, he's a Liberty City Gwen Cherry boy. He was a beast in HS but his grades & test scores were just too bad he couldn't get in anywhere.

He ended up going to a Prep school in North Carolina, NC Tech (which is a known fraud program that does a lot shady business in trying to get kids with bad grades & that come rough backgrounds & have no other options).

He was supposed to go to FIU but got into a fight & was never officially admitted, then a WR's coach who recruited him at Norland brought him onto CMU as a Walk-on with Butch Jones.

There is a very sad story behind what he went through down here. He doesn’t like to talk about it.
Most wouldn’t be in his position. It’s not uncommon unfortunately. But to put into context he was homeless for most of his senior year.
Interesting. The back story helps explain some of his personality quirks.

Good stuff, as usual. Much better than my theory that is was the Rivals site which shows his school north of Lake O and east of Tampa, then when you tap in, it shows downtown Miami. I grew up off 183 st a little west of Norland and it is not in downtown Miami. I figured the recruiters just couldn't find him.

Such a talent but always seems to be in the middle of a lot of drama.

Some people are damaged young and never really recover. Then, if they’re talented, they are enabled for much of their lives until it all comes crashing down. I hope that’s not going to be the case with him.

You can see that he’s somewhat being enabled now in Oakland. Until they come to a point where they won’t put up with it anymore.

This is spot on. They had a long article about his life story a few years ago and this is basically what happened. Just a local South fla kid who got lost in the fold but still was able to make it out due to immense talent.

Is Antonio Brown Downtown Eddie Brown's kid? #40 for Da U on our first title team? First round pick of the Bengals in like 1985?

I don't think that's the Eddie Brown who was a Miami star in the mid-'80's. I have seen the name attached to a Miami guy, also a wide receiver, but not the kind of talent that played for our first NC team and later played for the Bengals. I haven't lived in South Florida for decades, and I am not familiar with a lot of the guys who came out of the city unless they are big name recruits.

You might want to clarify that there is more than one Eddie Brown and since this is a a Miami board there might be confusion.
.EDIT: Antonio Brown's father Eddie starred in Arena football. Not the same as former UM and Bengal star Fast Eddie Brown. (Schnellenberger considered our Eddie Brown similar to Paul Warfield.)

UM's Eddie Brown. Held, and still might hold, NFL record for ypc for receivers with more than 50 receptions.

No different Eddie Brown.

Antonio's pops went to college at La Tech & played Arena league ball, then eventually became a coach. He was HC at MNW for 2 years when Uncle Luke was DC & also coached at Boyd Anderson for a lil bit. He's currently the OC for ASA Miami JUCO.
