Social media’s impact on football coaches

I actually tend to think Jimmy would have been buried on social media too. The situation with him and the leftover coaches in 1984 was the very definition of toxic. And then in 1985, losing to the Gators opening day and getting blown out by Tennessee in a major bowl game. And then the original Fiasco Bowl in the 1986 season. I think social media may have dragged JJ down to the point where we wouldn't have won a title in 1987, had it existed at the time.

I also do think that in general, we are some of the worst fans on social media, and tend to play a real part in creating that air of toxicity around our own program. It would help somewhat if a preponderance of our fans weren't such ****s on social media. IMO.

FSU literally had a fan post a picture with Willie Taggart's face photo shopped unto a hanging black man. This narrative that we have the worst fans on social media needs to die quickly.

Or maybe just maybe, the coach could not suck. All negativity coming from fans is warranted.

His refusal to accept clear weakness is troubling. His son is a joke yet Rick continues to employ him.

This is the first year “the weakness” fully showed its head. Last year we had recruited N’kosi and Jarren while Rosier played better than anybody thought he ever could.

So it wouldn’t have made sense to fire him last season.

However, this year QB recruiting is a failure and the QB’s did not progress. So this year there’s a great case. However assistants usually don’t get fired until after the bowl or signing day. So there’s time for Richt to do the right thing. That’s why we shouldn’t make things so toxic that all recruits jump ship

Agreed.

The kids talk. They don't pay attention to old farts on an outdated social media platform.

Dudes, we are not cool to these kids. And our coach is old and uncool too. And banners make no difference to them.

Recognize the change.

This has been proven false time and time again. People who use excuses like this, are in fact, part of the problem. The kids pay attention and it taints how they view things.

There’s a lot of truth to what u say, but I think you’re leaving something out...

The level of toxicity rose as it did not just because Al couldn’t field a decent D, but also because he refused to try to fix it. Rick is making the same mistake.

When the problem is obvious, and the HC stubbornly sticks by what isn’t working, the fans are gonna be angry.

If Al got a real DC, the fans would’ve put their fangs away for a season. If rick gets a real OC, the fanbase will settle down.

Not holding my breath tho.

This.

It's not just the level of social media and rapidity with which folks can respond.

Richt's (and Golden's) problem is doing stupid **** and continuing to do stupid ****. We have a lot of fairly intelligent football folks here - and problems are recognized quickly and easily.

No one has a problem if our coach can't win every game - but we absolutely want to see improvement - progression. Not retrogression.

These dumbasses who are with the Admin, our AD, and our BOT need to pull their heads out of their sphincters and have a look around. THE MOST visible national representation is the one that's on television and viewed by millions of people on Saturdays during the season.

What kind of school is UM? Well, they aren't very good - in fact - UM is ****poor selecting Head Coaches - how good are they at selecting professors?

WIth a national talent pool right in their backyard - what's wrong with UM that most of the top talent wants to leave and play elsewhere?

The football program brought UM to its first national recognition - a transition from a small, private school in Miami - to a national recognition we've been riding since Schnellenberger.

UM needs to cowboy up and make this right - take advantage of the name recognition that was built up on the shoulders of others.

Not continue a half-assed blanket dragging approach to our greatest marketing mechanism.

You say that but our current players are constantly responding to fans on social media. So they must care and I’m sure recruits notice

There's also been an explosion (as in diarrhea) of sports talk radio and tv since the 1990s. And drama/criticism keeps people listening and watching....

FSU fans started a gofundme to replace Willie Taggart 3 games into the season of his first year

Well I get that. He was hired with a losing record and that team (with top 5 recruiting) almost lost to a D2 school.

We have a coach with a top 10 winning % and just had our best season in 15 years. That’s why we look more silly

So basically you're going to keep excusing the FSU fan base for doing overboard ****. UF fan base thought it was cool to make fun of Sean Taylor's death "because it's all fun and games in the rivalry" while we make fun of Aaron Hernandez for being in jail.
An auburn fan burned down a well known and historic Alabama tree years ago...that's some foul **** to do. We aren't the only fan base who goes ape **** over bad times. In addition, other fan bases have bigger and more idiots than us. We just see our own bull**** more because we mostly follow our own bull ****.

I didn't make myself clear, I was referring to what was being said on this board.

Twitter, yes. That's why I agreed with the OP.

I disagree. if he gets a good OC and OL coach some of the toxicity would go away. Its social media so there will always be some toxic elements.

Correction....An Alabama fan poisoned a historic tree at Toomer's corner in Auburn.

The big problem for slugs like Rick and Folden is social media. It used to be that the only coverage you’d get of UM football was Edwin Pope and Linda Robertson gargling the goo of whoever was the UM HC. And the feeble voices of UM on WQAM making excuses for struggling coaches and dismissing any dissenting voices. As a result, the HC had a lot more leeway and recruits weren’t bombarded with an instant flow of information and truth.

Now, the minute a coach is revealed as a fraud it’s broadcast all over the world, and recruits are hammered with what a disaster the HC is. The program immediately becomes toxic, and recruiting goes in the tank. It’s a very palpable phenomenon.

Our first hardcore social media age HC was Folden. Look at the way the program became toxic as soon as he was revealed as a fraud. We went from beating Alabaga for a bunch of recruits to stealing guys like Bobyonce’ Knowles and Terrance Henley from FIU. Same pattern is now underway with Rick.

I tend to think that once our program reaches this level of social media toxicity I don’t think the current HC can turn it around. It’ll take a miracle OC hire who instantly transforms the offense into a top 5 deal. Otherwise, it’s a wrap. It can’t be slow progress that us vultures could immediately poke holes in. It would have to an immediate and very noticeable turnaround.

If Booch David did what he did here during this same social media age he never would have made it past year 3 or 4. The standard here at the time was infinitely higher than it is now, and he would have been buried by the fans in today’s social media world.

Ok, so explain whose fault it is that it gets to the this point? I just don't get it really.
This was a bad year with expectations etc. because the O just wasn't any good and a lot falls on scheme but a lot also falls on the signal caller as well. I will go 50/50 blame. We just didn't have a good enough veteran QB or a phenom in Perry. Perry looks like he could be a good college QB if he keeps his head straight, studies film and works hard but its a gamble at this point with what he has shown/done.
For the fans to get outright toxic is really despicable to me. We won 10 games last year. Richt was the ACC coach of the year last year.

Agree on the impact of social media at Miami, why aren’t Oregon, A&M, Penn st, FSU, Tenn, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Stanford and NC st (all teams that are ranked ahead of us in recruiting that had disappointing seasons relative to expectations) feeling the same effect?

Seems to me unless you’re Bama or Clemson there’s always something to ***** about, and Miami fans either have way more time on their hands to ***** or I(we) notice it more because we’re closer to the program.

Again, who cares about class rankings, and alot of the schools you named have alot of cap space for recruits, but even still, for all the star gazers, how many defenses were better than ours this year, or last year. The system that coach diaz is running is natural for Miami athletes, its how we grew up playing.

People acting as if our recruiting class is in shambles, this next class will be one of the best classes, cause they not coming in like alot of the bandwagon recruits did last year who are the main ones who were the crybabies this year and dont realize they are the ones who have not been good enuff, but the class coming in next will be the strong minded class, they not coming in cause we had a real good season, they coming in because they believe in this coaching staff but most importantly, they want to be Canes.

All the 1000% committed crybabies from last years class, let's see how many of them roll out, UM is for men only, which is why it was beautiful the way jt4 was separated from the family, not that i wanted him to go, but the message is clear, you cry, you want out, ok, have a nice day, znd that's how it should be done. That punt return by deejay dallas was for jt4, along with the homer block, 2 guys that work hard, seeing a teammate quit, that's why deejay had the "bye felicia" face on when they asked him bout jt4!

Our program is better since Richt has been here (IPF, Respect in the Community, won the coastal, "Miami Defense", Top 5 ranking last year, etc.)

But there are clear and obvious flaws he has as an Offensive Coach/OC/Play Caller that killed our progress and season this year

If Mark doesn't make the obvious changes (Hiring an OC, Firing Searles, and demoting his son/give up play calling) he will end up just like Golden and we'll be an irrelevant once again.

Our hope as fans lies within Mark to come to his senses and not be stubborn. Unfortunately I'm not sure he will
