Other than the former is a an uninspiring bumpkin from West Texas and the latter is a bratty wise guy born on third base.
Each is widely recognized as an offensive wizard, but is that actually enough in itself to return a program to elite status and/or maintain dominance in this era of College Football? Sooner or later, defensive coordinators always figure out a way to contain a certain approach, scheme, alignment or play call. Geniuses come, geniuses go.
Riley and Kiffin share a disdain for recruiting and hob-nobbing with alumni or fans. Neither would ever be described as a culture-builder. Basically it's "let me stay in my corner office and draw up ways to outsmart these DC's but leave me the **** alone cause I'm not really interested in the rest of my $10M-plus job."
Is that mindset enough to get UF or LSU where they want to be or keep Ole Miss at the level the Rebels are this season?
Riley went 55-10 at OU but lost his three most significant CFP matchups to Smart, Saban and Burrow/Chase/Jefferson.
USC is stuck in neutral and the underachieving Trojans could finish outside the Top 25 for the third straight season during his four years in LA.
Why should we expect a much-prized hiring of Kiffin to do anything much better with the Tigahs or Gators?
