Manny says all the right things, I have heard the right things said now 5 times in a row, it is literally like listening to the teacher on Charlie Brown, wawaawaaaa wa waa wa waa
We hired like we were trying to rescue hostages, I hope Manny does well but when you analyze this decision and the process that went into it we have literally combinedd all the mistakes of the previous 4 hires into this 5th hiring:
1) Hired a coordinator who had never been a head coach before that the players liked (Coker)
2) Hired our D-Coordinator who had some success but had no head coaching experience (Shannon)
3) Hired a Temple Coach (Golden)
4) Hired a guy in the blink of an eye, we had a full blown search and when CMR was let go we all of a sudden swooped in to get him as if anyone on the planet wanted him other than us (Richt)
If you analyze this it is all the sins of the past rolled up into one hire, Manny Diaz. No HC experience, Coordinator who the players like, was our d-coordinator who had some success but that does not mean success as a head coach, was at Temple for 2 weeks, and we turned around and hired him in the blink of an eye, we did not even have a process.
Of course everyone on this board wants Manny Diaz to succeed, but if that is all it took to be successful in the world then there would be quite a few more successful people in the world. When you start by making a hasty decision it usually leads to bad results. There was no need to go faster, Manny was not going to be leaving for somewhere else, we got him out of Temple after 2 weeks! However, we do not even know what we could have gotten on the free market because Blake James went from being surprised at 3:00PM in the afternoon at his press conference to hiring Diaz at 10:00PM, what in the **** kind of idiotic, childish process is that?
Ryan Tannehill never once had to compete to get the job as the starting QB for the Fins, not one season, not even as a rookie. Likewise Manny Diaz was not measured against anything to compare the pros and cons, this was a rushed hire, for some unknown reason and now we are back to hoping that Manny is the right choice! There is a great deal to be said for enduring a coaching search process and being picked as the best choice, there is quite a different feeling when only one candidate is forced down your throat and you are told he is the best.
All the best to Coach Diaz, I wouldn't want to get the job the way it happened because people like me are going to require a lot more than words to give you immediate trust. If he succeeds then we will all be happy, but I have seen this situation before and miracles rarely happen.
