Well, your comment was about discipline, which comes in all forms (not just law & order or overly heavy handed measures)...ultimately discipline is a consequence, it doesn't encompass all consequences, but it does alter behavior. I run a fairly large organization and I can tell you that a well designed system of rewards and punishments is essential. People learn from it all the time...in fact, I would state the opposite of your original point, that if one doesn't learn from disciplinary measures, they aren't really all that grown up.

I feel we have an interesting perspective in society. Where people think being a man or being an adult is by age rather than actions. I don't curse. At least I try not to, and if I do it is very rarely and would drop the jaws of everyone that knows me. People find it weird. I always felt the more adult thing to me is to not curse, rather than reaching a certain age and it becomes free reign to.

In life I am sure we all have seen people older than us who we have it so much more together than. Then if you live long enough you will see people younger than you who have it so much more together than you. To me that has always been maturity, adult, being man, whatever you want to call it. Actions rather than age.
