So, in order for us to survive deep into the CFP we have 2 things that must be fixed...

I'd be interested in knowing how often does an OL go from being average mid-season to being good/great by year's end.
I think that all relies on Buchanan. Because against Clemson, this offense line was good to above average without a doubt. Just gotta get him back.

When is OJ projected back?

Also, we have to stop blitzing from 10-12 yards off the ball. It's so ineffective, and it creates visible islands.
Word in another thread is he is ahead of schedule in his Rehab. So I remember when he first got hurt, everyone was saying around the ACC title game, but if we can get him back before that around the last couple of weeks of November that would be awesome! That way he can get his legs underneath him for a couple of games.

I've said this for years on here, if you go into a season still playing musical chairs, its very hard for an OL to play as a coehsive unit and get better. I say this as a ten year OL starter from junior high through college.

These guys are all talented in their own way-man they have had some good stretches and run blocked great on a few drives when we desperatley needed it. And, our sacks haven't been bad for 6 games. But they need reps playing together as a group to get better, as a group, to face the type of fronts teams have in the playoffs.

... pass pro and defending the pass.

Unlike 2024', we actually have the horses and coaches to get this done, so I still have hope. The question is - will they figure out the Chinese puzzle that is our OL and as our players get healthy in the secondary, will the returning players get their sea legs and communicate better?

Anyone hearing or believing that these two things will happen or will we just not get that figured out for the CFP?
I think Mensah can help the Oline also with quicker reads and maybe run a little more

Buddy, max ain’t coming back until / if we get playoff and a bye. And that’s best case. Someone has to step up off the bench. And our OL gurus need to rotate in game. Pitt at home is great oppt

It’s a six week Rehab. He got hurt in the beginning of October. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to believe we get him back sometime towards the middle or end of November.

Pitt is 38th in sacks and UNC is 57th. Either they are getting home and not bringing the QB down or they don’t have a good pass rush.
Pitt is 22nd out of 138 in sacks/game against FBS opponents and 11th out of 68 P4 teams. Fairplay on UNC, but they do have that DT who has 7 sacks.

I would add special teams to this as well. Our special teams' units are still a disaster. It cost us last year and it will do the same this year. Take Toney off punt return and that unit would also be F-. We can't set a return up for him, even if the ball is a low line drive kicked right to him. We are lucky Toney is back there to at least field the ball cleanly every time.

Crazy to say because we had 3 first rounders, but Keionte Scott is clearly the biggest “wish he was still here” player from last years team.

It’s the most important player in Heatherman’s scheme and right now we’re not even getting 50% of the production Scott provided.

He was the difference maker in the A&M and OSU game.

He’s gotta play to get clicking, hope it happens soon

Imagine the UM staffer:

"Look I know it's not clicking in practice with no pressure but I really think his technique and movement skills will click in live games protecting our season (QB)."

were acting like he was dominate when he played...he wasnt.....

Nobody could ever convice me that our main problem isn't Shannon Dawson's inability to adapt to his teams skillset. We need to be running the spread. Get the ball out quick. Make adustments.

we all know that many of the back end issues against FSU were because of personnel issues, but I need to raise another subject because this is exactly how I felt after the Louisville game last season

Heatherman needs to self scout. He has become too predictable. Norvell seemed to have a really good grasp of when we were blitzing and how to beat the blitz. The 2 screens for TD’s were obvious, but FSU also dropped a screen pass earlier in the game that would likely have hit.
Beyond those 2 plays FSU just seemed to know how to attack the defense. I don’t think that is all personnel driven.

I really like Heatherman and I hope he sticks around for a few years but he needs to do against his own tendencies. Good OC’s can find the gaps. Norvell certainly did.

Remember Samson and McCoy played guard last year and switched to tackle this year. So in reality we lost five starters. Not 3. And truthfully Samson and McCoy as tackles aren’t all conference guys (yet?) so it’s a huge downgrade from two top three round guys at tackle and cooper who was a grizzled grey hair vet last year. Brock was a solid center as well

I think if bell got cleared there would be zero oline issues. He would have played himself into a first round pick too

Bell/samson/ryan/max or ben/mccoy
