So Donna Was Going To

Have not seen the movie, but timeline does not seem to make sense. Coker was promoted on 2/3/2001 and Shalala was hired on 6/1/2001.

i just realized that too. yet all the players were saying they heard alvarez was hired to come in. weird

I don't think she was coming from Wisconsin to Miami ... I thought she was coming from the White House?

Maybe she had reached out to Barry about joining her at Miami prior to actually assuming the position of President?

Donna Edna Shalala
Chancellor, 1988-1993
Donna Shalala assumed the office of chancellor in January 1988, becoming the second woman to lead a major research university and the first woman head of a Big Ten university. She initiated the Madison Plan to attempt to recruit and hire minorities and was a strong advocate for UW athletics. Shalala received her AB degree in history from Western College for Women in 1962, served in the Peace Corps in Iran, and received her PhD from The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 1970. She taught at Bernard M. Baruch College and Columbia University before becoming a director and treasurer of the Municipal Assistance Corporation, established to restore the financial health of New York City. In January 1977 Shalala became assistant secretary for policy development and research of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Carter, a position she held until 1980 when she became president of Hunter College. Shalala was president at Hunter until she came to Madison. She stepped down as chancellor in January 1993 to become secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services under President Clinton, a post she held for eight years. In June 2001 Shalala became president of the University of Miami.

Oh look it's written in a passage it must be true!

Everyone claims she's a strong advocate for athletics here too. It's bull****, she's been the biggest cancer to our University in all respects, especially athletics since she's got here.

she went to syracuse yet wants to keep football players out of the U because she wants to be an ivy league school smh i would have though she went to a top 10 school

bring in Alvarez, and the players shut that down by "demanding" Coker coach, just to keep Alvarez from ******** up the team.

Maybe she's still ****ed at the football program?

And didn't Wisconsin's football program really pick up after Donna left UW?

Sounds like Shalala is a program destroyer. And she's in charge?

I LOL'ed at Barry Alvarez getting scammed by Shapiro. Who do you think made that introduction?

Barry Alvarez actually would have been a solid hire. That guy is a good coach. Not sure that the results would have been different in 2001 or 2002, but the program would have been on much more solid footing going forward. A guy like him could have avoided the UT loss in 2003, for instance. Wisconsin was a terrible program when he took over and he basically built them into a regular competitor for Rose Bowl bids.

btw "supporting" athletics doesn't even mean much. I'm sure Shalala "supports" athletics. That doesn't mean that she has a ******* clue on how to get a competent athletic department going, though. And it sure as **** doesn't mean that the administration of the school will embrace our football team's brand (i.e., attitude, aggressiveness, flash, etc.)--instead they've actively rejected it.

Paul Dee had a lot of power when he hired Coker. I'm pretty sure he had enough power to hire a football coach. I doubt that he got overpowered by a group of players.

In fact, he offered the job to Wannstache at an unprecedented high salary at the time. Wannstache rejected the offer, and he wound up hiring Coker.

You fail to mention Wisconsin was getting better each of her last three years there culminating with a Rose Bowl birth in her last year.

I'm no Donna fan but don't act like she was destroying Wisconsin football.

Barney Alvarez would have been one of the best HCs we've ever had here. That dude was very good. People look at Wisconsin as a good program, but when he got there it was one of the top 5 worst jobs in the country. They were horrible forever.

There was one slight issue......money.Supposedly Alvarez was coming to the U until Wisc.raised Alvarez
salary to $2mil.and then the U settled on Coker.

How has she managed to fvck things up so magnificently here? I don't get it.

Barney wasn't dumb enough to hire El Foldo after this season. Our AD is praising him and probably wants to give him an extension and a raise.

Lost in this discussion is the information that Barry Alvarez turned down donna, twice; Once after Butch and again after coker.

Why would he leave wisconsin for UM? Dude won a rose bowl and they built a statue of him at WI. What could he ever do here that would match that?

He could have a dish named for him at Taco Rico.
